The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

Abruzzo rivals Umbria and Tuscany for spectacular mountain scenery, medieval hilltop villages and historical sites yet is largely undiscovered by tourists. The landscape ranges from the high snow-covered peaks of the Gran Sasso to the sandy beaches of the Adriatic. This truly authentic part of Italy has been made accessible by the modern Pescara-Rome motorway and more recently by Ryanair’s daily flights from Stansted. The migration of Italians after the war to seek jobs in America and Canada means that many locals speak English and everywhere you go you receive a really warm Abruzzo welcome.

Sulmona / Roccacasale Village area

Roccacasale is ideally placed to enjoy the outdoor delights of walking and skiing. The well appointed ski resort of Roccaraso with its modern lifts, excellent ski school and uncrowded pistes is just 40 minutes away . There are numerous delightful villages to visit, many with their own picturesque castles, such as Pacentro and Capestrano. Many villages hold their own food festivals and there is a week of jazz in nearby Introdacqua. Sulmona is famous for its confetti, sugar-coated almonds and also hosts an amazing medieval jousting tournament in the Piazza Maggiore at the end of July. The birthplace of the poet Ovid is a wonderful town to explore on foot with its museums, shops, restaurants and bars.
Other sight-seeing excursions include the animal sanctuary and wolf museum near Popoli, the beautiful mountain lake and village of Scanno, the underground caves of Stiffe, and the incredible Castrovalva, which perched high on a mountain ridge, inspired the drawings of Escher.

Ryanair have flights from Stansted to Pescara with a choice of car hire firms at this small, friendly airport. It is easy to access the autostrada for the 40 minute drive to the house which is just 5 minutes off the motorway. Alternatively, Rome Ciampino airport is only 1 hour 40 minutes away. There are rail and bus links from Pescara or Rome to Sulmona and then to the village, but a car is advisable.

Guestbook for Casa Castagna

February 2009
We came for the skiing – had four excellent days at Roccaraso. Only a half hour dive to Pratello which has access to all the ski areas. Even though it snowed heavily the roads were still clear.
The paraffin stove has a timer so waking up and going to sleep was really toasty!
Plenty of merry nights in and out of the house and with the locals.
We will be booking up again next year.
Ciao for now, Andrea and Greg.

February 2009
We enjoyed the ambience of Roccacasale and the walks in the area. Plenty of enjoyable nights eating and drinking with a few of them starting at the Marytown bar by the hotel Ginestre.
The snow was good – too much at times. The lifts were great – no queues and the restaurants and bars very clean and good value. Would recommend the skiing here and will probably come again even though I am not a lover of skiing!! The people are very friendly.
Thanks for a great holiday. Ciao, Heather and Laurie.

Our first time in provincial Italy! Peaceful, beautiful and very hospitable. The apartment was perfect.
We went up onto the Gran Sasso (one hour away) to walk from Rocca Calascio to San Stefano di Sessanio. The weather was atrocious but we could still appreciate its breathtaking beauty. We definitely recommend the eleventh century castle at Rocca Calascio (1500m) and the extremely well preserved village of San Stefano. The café here gave us the best and most authentic meal we had. Roccamorice is the place to go for climbing.
Thanks! Mike and Rebecca.

May 2009
Enjoyed a lovely week in Abruzzo. Seven days of absolutely gorgeous sunshine. Used Roccacasale as a base to explore the region. We particularly recommend Pacentro, Sulmona and Scanno (beautiful lake), but really you can’t beat taking one of the many walks and enjoying a picnic.
Abruzzo is somewhere we will always return to.
Many thanks, Beth and Neil.

August 2009
First time in Italy and this is the right place to fully immerse in the local culture; including gifts of tomatoes and self brewed wine from the neighbours and outdoor coffee shop culture downstairs. Places to recommend; Sulmona - Ristorante di Clemente; Scanno – lift up to the mountains; many local food shops and restaurants. We had a great week!
Thanks Laure, Carsten, Mathilde & Maximilien.
