The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

Abruzzo rivals Umbria and Tuscany for spectacular mountain scenery and features in George Clooney's latest film, 'The American'. The landscape ranges from the high snow-covered peaks of the Gran Sasso to the sandy beaches of the Adriatic. This truly authentic part of Italy has been made accessible by the modern Pescara-Rome motorway and more recently by Ryanair’s budget flights from Stansted. The migration of Italians after the war to seek jobs in America and Canada means that many locals speak English and everywhere you go you receive a really warm Abruzzo welcome.
The Sulmona / Roccacasale Village area
Roccacasale is ideally placed to enjoy the outdoor delights of walking and skiing. The well appointed ski resort of Roccaraso with its modern lifts, excellent ski school and uncrowded pistes is just 30 minutes away .
There are numerous delightful villages to visit, many with their own picturesque castles, such as Pacentro and Capestrano. Many villages hold their own food festivals and there is a week of jazz in nearby Introdacqua. Sulmona is famous for its confetti, sugar-coated almonds, and also hosts an amazing medieval jousting tournament in the Piazza Maggiore at the end of July.
Other sight-seeing excursions include the animal sanctuary and wolf museum near Popoli, the beautiful mountain lake and village of Scanno, the picture book Pacentro and the incredible Castrovalva, which perched high on a mountain ridge, inspired the drawings of Escher.

Holiday house has everything you need. Well equipped kitchen. Excellent location - house is located between 3 parks - at Maiella Park border. Beautiful village. Very reasonable price. It was easy to contact with owners - I got any additional information I needed. I would recommend this place to everyone. |
Guestbook for Casa Castagna
Our stay in Casa Castagna has been wonderful and not really long enough! The house has everything you could want as well as being the perfect location to see Abruzzo. Roccacasale people with their ‘bar culture’ are so friendly and welcoming.
Highlights of the visit have been the views from the ridge behind the damaged Castello d’Ocre and a perfect day with the clear views from Campo Imperatore. Ann and Roger have gone to a lot of trouble to supply lots of helpful information and Ann’s souvenir booklet is perfect.
No real recommendations for eating but suffice it to say that we plenty of euros into the local economy.

We enjoyed every minute of the holiday....we did many things in your lovely little book...the stations of the cross (goodness knows how!), the walk above the castle, the cemetery, Pacentro, Rianno, Lake Scanno, Sulmona and the confetti factory. As everyone says the villagers were so friendly and we had a wonderful animated "conversation" with Julia and Gilda - the memory of Julia's miming of the fierce dog brings tears to my eyes! We did not make it to Rome...we were enjoying so much locally....maybe next time!
Again thank you! Lesley May 2011
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful town. The region abounds in magnificent scenery and history. The people are wonderfully hospitable. We enjoyed New Year’s Eve with the town last night. The house is delightful and full of charm, just like the town.

Our first visit and it’s been both amazing and relaxing. In spite of all the relaxing we filled every day with new and breathtaking experiences; one worth mentioning is Villa D’Estate in Tivoli. The kids loved it. Abruzzo has everything. Fantastic nature with sea, lanes, mountains, forests and the most interesting culture. Thanks! Vicky, Benjamin, Emilia and Jane. July 2010
We found the house very well-equipped and comfortable with fantastic views. All of the day trips had wonderful scenery. We went twice to Lake Scanno; we hired a four-wheel bike the first time and a pedalo the second. Pescara, Silvi Marina beach cost 15 euros for an umbrella and two sunbeds from a lovely lady who owns the bar Skipper. The Acqua Garden at Corfinio was 50 euros (4 people) and had a café with very good value food, lovely fresh salads in the chiller and cooked food too.
All the villagers have been very friendly; love how they get together in the evenings outside the café and each other’s houses. A lovely Italian, rural holiday.

What a lovely, charming place! The house has everything you could need. The locals are so friendly; we ate out in different people’s houses in the village and had a constant flow of gifts of fruit, wine, limoncello and vegetables.
Pop in and see Franca and Mimmo at the bar and they will make you feel very welcome. The restaurant we enjoyed the most was La Rocca delle Streghe in the village. We will be back very soon.

Thank you Ann and Roger! We had a lovely time. Scanno and its lake are gorgeous. Hired a pedal boat there and caught the evening sun. ate a great lunch at Biffi’s in Sulmona. We want to come back.

This second visit was even better than the first! We enjoyed a trip to Pescara and followed the road north along the coast as far as Pineto which was lovely.
A trip to Pompei was excellent but very tiring – 3 hours each way. The Amalfi coast was beautiful but scary with the Italian drivers and narrow roads. Abruzzo is far more unspoilt and we were glad to get back to the peace and quiet. Same week next year please! Liz, John and Jane. October 2010
