The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
The beautiful region of Abruzzo is one of the best kept secrets in Italy and is renowned for its natural parks ( there is one on the doorstep of the town) made up from many hills and mountains and is a major draw for skiers and campers. To the east of Abruzzo lies the Adriatic Sea with its golden beaches and resorts.
As standard with Italy, this region comes with a wide variety of great food of which some you may not have tried before, so for those who enjoy culinary delights you will find much to discover here.
Sulmona area
Sulmona is at the foot of the Maiella massif, where today the river Vella flows into the Gizio and in pre-historic times a wide lake existed. Today the town is an important agriculture and commercial centre and is deservedly famous the world over for its confetti, and for its goldsmiths' tradition. The tradition is that it was founded in 1000 years BC by Solimo, a friend to Aeneas, fleeing from the city of Troy. The town was called Sulmo in Roman times and is mentioned by historians.
Unmistakable features of this fine, picturesque town so full of culture and history are the world-known "confetti" - sugar coated almonds There are documents describing sweets very similar to the present-day confetti since 14 AD, the little sugar coated almonds are present at every important occasion in Italian life. Sulmona is famous all over Italy also for its celebrated tradition of the "Madonna che scappa", held in Piazza Garibaldi on Easter morning.
Sulmona hosts a number of great restaurants, boutiques and a large market where visitors can hone their language skills in order to barter for great Italian clothing, shoes and novelties. For those who desire beach relaxation there are great beaches 45 minutes away and for the sporting type the ski resort of Roccaraso is only 20 minutes drive away from the property, making this a very inexpensive alternative to staying in the resort itself.
