The Central Transdanubia region
Lake Velence is the second largest natural lake and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. It is a natural reserve with bird species unique in Europe. Based on observations, the region boasts the largest number of sunshine hours in Hungary. Owing to the 1.5 m average water depth and the large number of sunshine hours, the water temperature reaches 26-28 oC in summer. The area offers a wide range of cultural events.
Sunsets are beautiful at Lake Velence. The 30 minute boat trip starts at 7:00 pm every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1 May to 18 October. Non-scheduled trips can also be requested by groups. From 1 May to 18 October scheduled boats travel every day between Velence and Pákozd, Szúnyog island. Also, tourists may participate in a 50 minute boat trip every day starting from Velence.
The world-famous distillery in Agárd offers 38 different award-winning pálinka and brandy specialities with guidance. With advance registration, and for a minimum of four people, lunch or dinner can also be requested, which includes food specialities made in a stone oven.
The Etyek-Buda wine region and the prestigious wine cellars in Mór and the Budafok region, which can be visited separately or in as part of an organised wine tour, offer wine tasting combined with local food specialities and delicious experiences. After registration, visitors are awaited for wine tasting with local dishes or bread and butter.
The protected reeds and moors of the lake are home to one of the largest and most colourful water bird populations in Hungary. The Bird Reserve is located in the western bay of the lake and belongs to the Duna-Ipoly National Park. Most of the rare birds living here can be spotted with a good pair of binoculars, which offers a unique experience.
The nearby arboretum covers 96 ha of the most beautiful spots in the Lake Velence area. It awaits visitors with a pond, picnic facilities for families, and a giant “adventure castle” for children. The lookout tower offers a marvellous view over Lake Velence. A romantic path under the canopy of the trees leads up to the lookout tower.
Pákozd's highlights include the '48 Memorial, the memorial chapel for those who fell by the River Don in WWII, the arboretum in Pákozd-Sukoró (for more information see the Arboretum section), the Regional Museum and the Fishing Exhibition. It is worth visiting the “rocking stones”, a unique geological phenomenon in Europe. The Bella Lake and the Anikó Spring are also highly popular locations with tourists.
The Lake Velence country house museum is only 10 minutes away. The museum also includes an exhibition with hundreds of minerals, crystals and fossils, and an old smith's shop. The museum can be visited after registration. Guests are shown around by a guide. The museum offers unique experiences to families with kids.
If you long for a truly romantic walk, visit the Brunszvik Mansion in Martonvásár! The English Park includes a small pond with a picturesque island and large, shady trees. The mansion hosts a Beethoven memorial exhibition, and there is a nursery school museum next to the building presenting artefacts from the history of nursery schools in Hungary. Children can try out toys with which their great-grandparents played. The museum offers unique experiences to families with kids.
Spend a day in Székesfehérvár, the capital of the county, which was the first town of the Hungarian people. The town, where the Hungarian kings were crowned, is rich in places of interest including the beautiful centre, the archaeological and fine art collections, and special and valuable public works of art. The City Hall Square with the Globus Cruciger and the Bishop's Palace, the Ruin Garden, the Saint Stephen Basilica, the romantic Bory Castle a bit farther from the city centre, and the colourful range of activities offer truly memorable experiences.
The Valley is very popular among those who seek tranquillity. In a picturesque setting, where the Váli and the Vértesacsa water course encounters, lies the Alcsútdoboz Arboretum. The 40 ha area includes the most genuine English Park in Hungary. The reconstructed chapel and the doll house hosts various exhibitions, while the castle park offers a great setting for leisure. Those seeking cultural attractions should visit the remains of the Habsburg castle in Alcsútdoboz, which comprises a stable and a building compound. The castle ruins in Vál, the Vajda House and the tower built in the Middle Ages are also worth a visit.
