About this location

The Dorset region

This tranquil village setting offers the perfect base for exploring the Dorset countryside, whether that's on foot or with the house bikes. Explore Shaftesbury with its famous Gold Hill, Sherborne with its independent boutique shops or the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Sturminster Newton

Primrose Cottage is located in the Dorset village of Marnhull, just a short stroll to our award winning village shop, butcher, hairdressing salon and 2 pubs one of which The Crown at Marnhull featured in Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Don your walking boots and explore Dorset's Blackmore Vale with footpaths right outside the cottage door. Explore the Wessex Ridgeway or the breathtaking views from Hambledon and Hod Hill. If cycling is your thing why not explore the quiet lanes around Marnhull and cycle to a country pub for lunch, we have maps and information on local rides for your use.

See Stonehenge the world heritage site and spend the afternoon exploring the Cathedral city of Salisbury or Take a tour of Wilton House. Make a day trip to Bath and visit the Roman Baths or treat yourselves to a pamper day at the Thermae Bath Spa.

For Garden Lovers you can't miss the chance to visit Stourhead. This National Trust property with its Palladian Mansion and follies is perfect for a picnic and is picturesque at any time of year. Visit the nearby gardens of Athelhampton, Abbotsbury, Mapperton, or Larmer Tree.

Head to the Jurassic Coast only around an hour by car. Search for fossils on this world heritage site, visit Lulworth Cove or Chesil Beach one of the finest barrier beaches in England. Sandbanks and Studland offer safe bathing and beautiful sandy beaches.

Shaftesbury is 15 minutes drive from Marnhull, the ancient hilltop town, the 'Shaston' of Thomas Hardy's novels. With its famous Gold Hill a cobbled street of pretty thatched cottages, which was famously featured in a Hovis Advert. Walk along castle hill which leads to spectacular views over the Blackmore Vale. The town has lots to offer for a day out with boutique shops, a great deli, cafes and galleries and a weekly Farmers Market.

Sherborne is 20 minutes drive from the cottage with its Castle and Abbey antique shops and independent boutiques. We also recommend visits to Old Wardour Castle, Hardy's Cottage, the Cerne Abbas Giant and Milton Abbas village.
