The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region

The Cotswolds are well known for breathtaking rolling countryside, gentle hillsides ('...wolds') and sleepy 'typically English' villages. This region is an area popular with both the English themselves and all visitors.
Sawmills Cottage provides an ideal base for visits throughout the region including the spa towns of Bath and Cheltenham, and historic Cirencester, Gloucester, Bristol, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon....
Bath, a designated World Heritage Site, is one of Britain's most beautiful and historically significant cities; The Regency Spa town of Cheltenham is a significant venue for art/music/literature festivals; Gloucester's historic Cathedral featured in the films of J K Rowling's first Harry Potter books; Oxford is home to one of the most prestigious Universities in the World; visit Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon...
It's a short drive toTetbury, world-renowned for its unique Royal associations. Highgrove, home of HRH The Prince of Wales is situated just outside Tetbury, and Gatcombe Park, home of the Princess Royal is also nearby
Diverse shopping opportunities, from specialist boutiques & designer outlet, to world class antiques and chain stores.
Something for everyone....
The Stroud / Ebley area
The Cotswolds has many well known attractions but here are a few of the more unique experiences within easy reach: local canal restoration, history in the making (www.cotswoldcanalsproject.org/brimscombe); take a trial flight in a glider, an adventurous way to take in the stunning local views; Bibury's Arlington Row, its origins dating from 1380, found in 'the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds' William Morris; the Severn Bore, a 'spectacular natural phenomena'; Hetty Pegler's Tump, part of the Cotswold's Neolithic history, and so much more..
It's a ten minute drive up to the Commons with some of the most beautiful National Trust managed common land in the country, with outstanding and far reaching views over the Cotswolds, and towards the Severn Estuary and Wales beyond. Horses and cattle roam freely across the Commons, and the grassland slopes are home to rare butterfly and wildflower species including thirteen species of orchid. Minchinhampton Common has many interesting and important archaeological features, some dating from the Neolithic period.

This was a very enjoyable stay and was everything that it said in the advert. The only thing that would have improved the stay would have been a garden but the cottage's location being a few seconds from the canal, made up for this. We thoughly recommend a walk, via the canal to Stroud town centre (best to pick a day when the market is on as this is a must visit). We didn't visit the local pubs but made use of the very well equiped kitchen where thoughtful touches, such as tea, coffee, milk etc. were available to make drinks on arrival. The locaion is also very well placed for touring the local area, Cirenchester cathedral, Cotswold etc. Very thoughtful touches also included toiletries for the bathroom - not forgetting fluffy bath robes. Read the books in the lounge about the canal restoration - very interesting. We will definitely be re-booking again this year, to just relax and explore a very beautiful area and also to check on the canal restoration progress. |

The cottage was very clean and smartly done out. The kitchen had everything we needed and bedroom and bathroom were particularly nice. The whole place is quite small, but very cosy and perfect for 2 people who are going out to explore the local area during the day. The location isn't anything special, but it is very easy to drive from there to visit many lovely villages not too far away, as long as you have a car. For us it was particularly convenient to be able to stay for just a few days rather than have to book a whole week. |
