The Central England/Cotswolds region
Stroud lies on the Cotswold Way, and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by small villages and market towns. Encircled by five sweeping valleys opening out to the River Severn and made famous by Laurie Lee's novel “Cider with Rosie”, the scenery around Stroud is dramatic. It is a great meeting place, with direct links to London, making it a Bohemian/café/gallery/bookshop sort of place. It has been described as 'the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds'.
Today, visitors come to Stroud to explore its surrounding hills, to delve into the history of its mills and textiles, and to potter amongst the many privately owned shops and workshops, which teem with the fruits of local craftsmanship. Stroud is home to one of the highest concentrations of artists and craftsmen in Britain, many of whom you may encounter as you wander down the High Street.
Stroud is also home to an award-winning farmers market, which is well worth a visit. Interesting people, lots of different stands, cuisines from all over the world, and lots of local produce too. Entertainment from local musicians and the market café add to the atmosphere of this well-established and popular market, held on Saturday mornings. You can sit outside a cafe and watch the world go by, or spend, spend, spend. Pay & display car park nearby.
There are lots of places to visit locally, including:
• The Museum in the Park, Stroud
• Rococo Gardens, Painswick
• Berkeley Castle, Berkeley
• Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, Slimbridge
• Owlpen Manor, Owlpen
• Glevum Boat Hire, Sharpness
• Woodchester Mansion, Woodchester
• Gloucestershire Guild Gallery, Painswick
• Dunkirk Mill, Nailsworth
Stroud is surrounded by stunning scenery, lots of quaint little villages, complete with wonderful country pubs. You can walk along the Cotswold Way then stop for refreshments at one of the many hostelries.
You are well placed to visit Cheltenham or Bath - well known for their modern shops, theatres and histories. There are regular buses and a train station nearby, so even without a car you can still explore the Cotswolds from Upper Lodge.

I absolutely loved my stay at the little castle. Everything was perfect! It was so charming, so comfortable, beautiful interior. I had a hard time leaving it everyday to go out sightseeing.
I arrived to a nice bottle of wine and the table was set with tea, biscuits and tulips. Everything I needed was provided for me and everything explained. Warning the door will lock when you close it so don't walk out without the keys! Leslie was very kind to come out on a Sunday and let me back in.
I can't wait to go back and now consider the little castle my home away from home.

"Charming, individual house of character"
We love this house; it's a mini castle, with loads of character. Other reviewers have complained about the lack of a shower, but if you're not in a hurry why not take the opportunity to relax in a deep sumptuous bath, especially after a long walk. The house is comfortable, the heating makes it a very welcoming place to return to. The log-burner is an added bonus. The patio faces south , so it's a great place to enjoy the sun. The owners leave a welcome tray, which is a nice touch. They also stress that we get in touch if there's anything else they can do. The house is well-situated for Stroud and the surrounding countryside, and there is plenty of information available.

"Cosy and Welcoming"
Such a nice place to spend Christmas.
We felt very much at home...the fire place an absolute treat...so comforting.
Kitchen brilliantly equipt with all you'd need (even for a christmas lunch with all the trimmings!)
Gorgeous lounge with snuggle blankets and inviting sofa/armchairs...ambient lighting...twinkling lights on the christmas tree...we were so chuffed with the decorations which really made the lodge special and festive.
Only warning, take it carefully descending the stairs (for the loo) at night, they are slippery!
Decadent to soak in the tub, but tricky when washing your hair...would be great to have had a hand held shower outlet to attach.
Thank you for your review. We are in fact planning to refurbish the bathroom in March, and install a shower, as so many people like to have the option of bath or shower. We are also having a carpet fitted on the stairs.
We welcome comments from visitors, as they enable us to improve our service and provide what people require.
