The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
Looking at this perfectly preserved, beautiful little backwater, it is hard to believe that Bisley was once the wealthiest, most influential town in the whole of the stunning Five Valleys at the heart of the South Cotswolds.
Perched 1000 feet up, it presided over a flourishing wool trade and attracted artisans and entrepreneurs from far and wide. Architecturally, it remains fixed in the 18th century but the hustle and bustle has now passed it by and, where it was was heaving with traders, it is now a quintessentially, peaceful honey coloured village.
As a base, it is ideal for exploring the whole of the Cotswolds from the much more touristy North to the towns and citites on the outer limits of the region. Oxford, Bath, Cheltenham are easily accessible for a day trip and thanks to the fast train service, even London is only an hour and a half away although there are so many wonderful country pursuits to enjoy, the attractions of the capital may not be so enticing.
Stroud / Bisley area
Step outside the front door and walk into magical countryside. Any path leads you into adventure and it would take years to exhaust all the tracks and lanes in the immediate area. All the obvious country pursuits are readily available: riding, fishing, shooting, golf, polo with unusual attractions within easy reach.
A fantastic water park complete with man-made beach is only a short drive away for those hot sunny, summers that we can expect with global warming. If you like history, the Cotswolds abounds with architecture, museums, exceptional houses and gardens.
For the racing enthusiast, Cheltenham Racecourse [considered by many to be the most beautiful course in the world] hosts many famous fixtures throughout the year but the Queen of the Cotswolds [as the town is known] is not just about horses and Regency buildings - although they figure large - it is also the home of major, world class literary, jazz, science and classical festivals.

Further details indoors: There are zip and link beds in all but the attic bedroom, making this a versatile cottage, suitable for all different permutations of groups. All the bedrooms are individually furnished, decorated with antiques and old textiles to give a welcoming, atmospheric, feel. However, there are also plenty of modern conveniences: the numerous baths/showers mean that there is never a queue to get ready. The sitting room is dominated by a massive inglenook fireplace in which a roaring fire glows in wintertime. When the weather is fine, you can fling open the front door, duck under the datestone that reads 1720 and step out onto the terrace to take in the breathtaking views. A huge range and capacious fridge/freezer make serving up meals in the cosy dining room a positive pleasure.
Further details outdoors: Bisley, itself, is a village almost untouched by time, surrounded by lovely scenery in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All the normal country pursuits [walking, shooting, riding, cycling, fishing] are on the doorstep while the rest of the Cotswolds are within easy reach. Even Bath and Oxford are just a short and pretty car journey away. We provide patio furniture, a BBQ and garden games. Maps of the area, details walks and suggestions for trips are left in the cottage for guests use. We are always happy to help with any travel planning.
Further details
Rose Cottage is on a hill with a terraced garden. It may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. Additionally, like all period Cotswold cottages, it has a spiral staircase which may prove difficult for the very young on the elderly. Please do check with us if you have any questions.
