BookThe Central Ireland / County Roscommon region
Roscommon is perfect for a laid-back break thanks to its pristine rivers, lakes, hillsides and a profusion of historical attractions.
Celtic mythology enthusiasts should visit the 60 or more standing stones, cairns and fortresses village of Tulsk. The most important Celtic royal site in Europe, legend says that Queen Maeve’s palace was once in the area. And nearby Oweynagat Cave is believed to be the entrance to the otherworld. The Cruachan Aí Visitor Centre explains all.
Explore more recent history at Boyle Abbey; the Castlerea Railway Museum, with its collection of rail memorabilia; and 18th Century Strokestown House. Its Famine Museum, although tragic, is a must.
At King House Interpretive Centre, kids can don ancient cloaks or write with a quill while the Arigna Mining Experience offers underground tours exploring Ireland’s first and last coal mine.
The Strokestown area
Only 2 hours from Dublin, Strokestown is a heritage town in the Irish midlands – home to Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum and St John’s Genealogy Centre.

This gorgeous stone-fronted house is located 4.5 miles from town, in a spacious garden adjacent to Grange lake and harbour which holds good stocks of Pike, Bream, Rudd and Hybrids. This is an ideal touring base boasting a variety of attractions from fishing to golf and horse riding and nearby a children’s playground and tennis court.
