The North West Italy / Piedmont/Lake Maggiore region

The region of Lake Maggiore from Arona in the southwest all the way to Cannobio near the Swiss border is also known as the Verbano region. It is a vast and diverse area overflowing with both natural and historic wonders. From the Valle dell’Ossola to Verbania to Cusio and all the places in between there is so much to explore. Verbano is the region from Arona in the southwest to Cannobio near the Swiss border, and it is the area that has, for two centuries, been most frequented by tourists, artists, writers, politicians and jet-setters.
The hotels have been witness to many historic events, and the lake has been described in the pages of famous writers. On her shores are built the most beautiful villas, recalling times in which the nobility and wealthy chose the Piedmont lakeside for their summer holidays. The beauty of the scenery is not the only attraction. There is also the respect for nature, evidenced by the number of parks that have been established, the discreet and cordial hospitality of the people of the Verbano region, and the abundance of art and architecture.
From S. Carlone of Arona and all the way to the Swiss border, monuments and churches offer a rich array of artistic and architectural treasures to discover. A few examples will be more than sufficient to illustrate this. The powerful and colossal statue of S. Carlone that dominates Arona; to the north at Lesa the church of S. Sebastiano, a well preserved Romanesque structure, the church of S. Maria at Belgirate with its frescoes dating from the 1400’s, the splendid Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella, the Romanesque church of SS Gervasio and Protasio at Baveno, the religious edifices and the palace at Verbania, the Sacred Mountain of Ghiffa, the castles of Cannero, and the medieval traces that are still noticeable in the heart of Cannobio.
Art is not found only in the monuments, frescoes and preserved canvases in these religious buildings; there is so much more to see in the many museums that are part of the rich cultural landscape of this territory. For example, there is the Museo del Paesaggio (Museum of the Landscape) di Verbania, and some very curious museums such as the Museo del Cappello di Ghiffa (museum of hats) and the Museo del’Ombrello di Gignese (museum of umbrellas).
The Stresa area
To the tourist, who for the first time arrives in Stresa, is offered a breathless sight. At the beginning a superb window of the lake front, delineated with lines of palm trees, with flourishing gardens and facades of majestic hotels. Then, turning to look at the lake, enchanted, as if emerged from the same waters the spectacular Borromean Islands (Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori). It is enough the splendour of these visions to make one understand how Stresa has been able to become one of the maximum meetings of international tourism. The town, already at the middle half of the 19th century was the most elegant place to stay, the most visited by the international upper middle class.
Others again are the reasons of so much fame and prestige. Here art and nature are mixed together in a way that one respects the other, here the hospitality is to boast to generation and the cultural initiative, that happens in the course of the year, they are the necessary corollary of it. Symbol of the vitality of Stresa is the animated Plaza of the wharf, the vast and tree lined Piazza Marconi.
Here the neo-classic parish of Sant'Ambrogio faces the square. To the right of the church there is the famous Villa Ducale of the year 1770, also this is in neo-classic style. The notoriety derives from it having been the residence of the philosopher Antonio Rosmini, whom here also entertained Alessandro Manzoni. Now the villa is an active Centre of "Studi Rosminiani". Nearby, famous to the international congressmen, one can find the modern and well equipped Palace of Congresses. Another destination of notable tourist flow is Villa Pallavicino of the 19th century.
The interest for which is completely naturalistic, in that the large blooming park is rich in secular trees and has been transformed in an original zoological garden, where various species of animals live, including exotic animals like ostriches and kangaroos. In the outskirts of Stresa, at Gignese, that offers the panoramic view of the central basin of Lago Maggiore, one can visit the Alpinia Garden, rich in mountains and officinal plants, and the curious Umbrella Museum , that collects parasols and umbrellas of every epoch. Finally, it serves to remember that to the modern funicular connects Stresa to the ski slopes of Mottarone, another balcony on the Verbano.
Between the recurrent manifestations, signalled to a prestigious level is: the Competition of music for young people "Premio Franco Verganti", in April; the Cattedra Rosmini, at the end of August; the Musical Weeks International Festival, in August and September; the European Philatelist Show, in the first ten days of September.

I stayed in the first floor apartment with my partner and 3.5 year old son for 1 week in May. We had a lovely time, there was plenty to see and do in the local area, mini golf, a zoo, throwing stones into the lake, with the highlight probably being the trip to the borromean islands from the easy to use ferries (3 mins from apartment). As promised, the kitchen came ready stocked with all the essentials. The very helpful and fluent English speaking owner, Rossana, gave us a map with detailed information on the nearby shops / cafes. There was also a market at the weekend with food and clothes. |
