The North West Italy / Piedmont/Lake Maggiore region
Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in northern Italy. The north part of the lake belongs to Switzerland. The eastern banks form part of the Lombardia region and the western banks belong to Piedmonte. The exceptionally mild climate is a major contributing factor to the abundant subtropical vegetation found all around the lake. The great Renaissance cities of Cremona and Mantua are within easy reach - as are Milan and Turin. The area has an enviable climate of warm summers and crisp winters and has been a popular retreat since Roman Times. The wooded hillsides are perfect for walking/mountain biking and the lakes are a watersports haven.
Stresa area
Stresa is probably the best known resort on Lake Maggiore, renowned for its elegance, beauty and style. Colourful, exotic plants and shrubs thrive in the mild climate. The idyllic Borromean Islands are a short boat ride away and Monte Mottarone, with its superb views, is easily reached by cable car from Stresa's lido. The gardens of Villa Pallavicino and Villa Taranto are well worth a visit and a varied guide excursion is available. The long, lakefront promenade runs through landscaped gardens. The old town centre has been partly pedestrianised and comes to life in the evenings as the bars and restaurants spill out into the squares and holidaymakers explore the many shops amongst its narrow, cobbled streets. From the end of July through to September Stresa's celebrated International Music Festival offers classical music concerts.
Other lakeside towns such as Ascona, Bavero and Locarno are well worth a visit too.
Milan is a 1 hour drive away for visits to La Scala and the Il Duomo.
Local skiing is available within 45mins. and there are 8 golf courses, all within 30km.
