About the home

A lovely medieval stone home with private garden belonging to the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra.
This one floor house was one of the two Guards' houses of the castle and has its own private garden guaranteeing the guests privacy.
The place preserves the magic atmosphere of the past and a positive and quiet atmosphere making it ideal for people searching a place to rest and tank energy and for those interested in discovering the hidden treasures of the Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which is still rather unknown.

The main buillding is connected by an arch to the church of St. Nikolaus, formerly the castle's chapel, where catholic masses are held on Sundays at 7:30 and 11:00, on one side and to the ancient tower on the other side.
The setting is really beautiful and the whole castle complex is surrounded by lovely gardens, crossed by spring-water streams and rivers.
At the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra the counts of Strassoldo have finely restored three beautiful stone holiday homes: La Vicinia, Casa Rambaldo and Casa Artuico.

BookThe North East Italy / Friuli-Venezia Giulia region
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a beautiful region of North Eastern Italy bordering with Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea, next door to Veneto and, therefore, less than one hour's drive from Venice.
The territory is not on highly beaten tourist tracks and, therefore, preserves a very special flair and is the melting pot of many different cultures.
In a small perimeter there is a great variety of different landscapes from high mountains, rolling hills, green fertile plains to rock or sand beaches with many important and pretty historical sites and towns.
In 400 a.C. this area was conquered by the Celts and afterwards in 300 a.C. by the Romans who in 181 a.C. built the beautiful colony of Aquileia (10 car minutes from Strassoldo) one of the most important towns of the Empire, which still preserves stunning mosaics and rests. With the end of the Roman Empire many "barbarian" tribes crossed the region's alpine passes, like the Huns that destroyed Aquileia in 452 d.C. and the Langobards that settled down here from 568 to 776 setting up the Duchy of Cividale which was then destroyed by the Avars, but still preserves a lovely "Devil's bridge" over the green Natisone river and several other attractions.
Charlemagne annexed it to Austria choosing Cividale as capital of a territory which then included also Istria and part of Eastern Tirol (796).
Destroyed again by the Hungars it was divided into four parts (828) and under Otto I the region became part of Bavaria (952) remaining under the Saxon domination until 1420.
The area was then dominated by the Venetians for nearly four centuries until it was dominated by Napoleon who signed the Agreement of Campoformido owing to which it became part of Austria from 1797 to 1805. From 1805 to 1814 it belonged to the Italian Kingdom and then passed under Austrian domination again until the Third Independance War after which, in 1966, it was again annexed to Italy with the exception of the Province of Gorizia and Strassoldo, which became part of Italy after the First World War.
The region's climate is very nice and long Summers, wonderful Autumns and Springtimes and mild Winters.
The Strassoldo area
Strassoldo is a cute little village of the green friulian lowlands stretching to the Adriatic coast.
The village developped around its ancient castle mentioned already in 530 a.C. which has always been inhabited by the same family (the counts of Strassoldo) that built it.
A few centuries later the former castle was split in two: the Upper (castello di Strassoldo di Sopra) and Lower (castello di Strassoldo di Sotto) castles.
Strassoldo is set in a very central position from where it is easy to reach many charming sites natural and historical attractions and the guests can, therefore:
- visit the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia (8 car minutes), with its excavations, wonderful Basilica with the vastest floor mosaic of the World
- go swimming in the Adriatic sea, choosing between several seaside resorts like: 1) Grado, with its golden sand beach (the nearest, which is reachable in only 18 car minutes), ideal for families, in ancient times fore-port of Aquileia, with its beautiful old centre and many good fish restaurants; 2) Lignano, with its sand beach, ideal for families and also for young people as their are discos and so on; 3) other rocky beaches on the coast near to Trieste (40 car minutes)
- visit beautiful cities and minor towns full of history, nice shops, "osterias" (local wine bars) and that special north-Italian flair
- taste local food and wine in excellent country-side restaurants
- make day excursions to Venice (from the nearby station of Cervignano there are trains every hour to Venice), Trieste (a lovely port city), Slovenia or Austria
- taste excellent wine in the local cellars
- go riding a bike in the lovely natural environment
- go sailing in the wonderful Laguna of Grado, Gulf of Trieste and Venice
