The South/Borders region

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering.

Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge. For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.

Stranraer area

Stranraer is a popular destination for travellers settling off on the daily local ferries for Ireland – to Larne and Belfast. But this town on the west coast of Scotland has plenty to commend it as a destination in its own right. It is situated at the inner point of Loch Ryan, and is surrounded by nature at its finest. Just three miles away are the Castle Kennedy Gardens which lie between two lochs and feature grand rhododendron walks, a monkey puzzle avenue and pathways through magnificent woodland glades. The scenery is breath-taking.

Also within easy reach is the Galloway Forest Park, which is dominated by The Merrick, southern Scotland’s highest mountain, and the famed Logan Botanical Gardens. There is a choice of four golf courses in the area including Stranraer and the world famous links course at Turnberry.
