Perfect for a 'get away from it all' break in the beautiful surroundings of Strangford and Lecale for families, couples and groups of friends.

Mallard Cottage welcomes you to kick back and relax together in front of the roaring fire in a spacious, traditional Irish cottage with all mod cons. Or, to get out into the local countryside to explore both land and lough and the huge range of activities the area has to offer.

Built in the mid 18th Century and still in family ownership, the cottage was sympathetically extended and renovated to a very high standard in 2013. It still retains many of the original features in the old part of the house and has gorgeous timber finishes running throughout.

Admire sweeping open fields and views towards the Mourne Mountains and St Patricks Monument at Saul from the courtyard and private garden or enjoy a BBQ together at the picnic table on the enclosed sheltered patio area.

The cottage is also within walking distance of four 'Game of Thrones' locations in Castleward and Myra.


LOUNGE/DINING ROOM - Large bright room with settees and home cinema satelite TV and surround sound system. Dining table and chairs

KITCHEN - The main room of the original house, finished in the traditional manner. Fully equipped with gas cooker, dishwasher, fridge, microwave ,electric kettle, filter coffee maker, toaster etc, It also has a breakfast table and an open fire suitable for burning logs and peat. We provide a welcome pack including: tea, coffee and basic condiments.

SITTING AREA - Bright sitting area overlooking the patio area.

CLOAKROOM/UTILITY - WC and wash basin. Washing machine , filtered drinking water outlet, steam iron and ironing board ,clothes drying rack, large larder fridge and freezer.

BEDROOMS - Sleeps 6 adults in comfort in three bedrooms each with en suite bathrooms. For families or close friends the sleeping arrangements can be extended to 8- 10 persons by use of bunk beds in the family room and a sofa bed in the sitting area. Cots and high chairs can be provided by prior arrangement.

Mallard Cottage is located between the ancient town of Downpatrick and the picturesque village of Strangford in the stunning County Down countryside close to Castleward Estate on the shores of Strangford Lough.

It is ideally located to explore the surrounding countryside. From high wild mountain passes to rich green pasturelands, curving sandy beaches to picturesque harbours and villages, Co Down has them all!

The cottage is within walking distance of the National Trust Castleward Estate, a 5 minute drive to the ancient cathedral town of Downpatrick and a 5 minute drive the historic sea port of Strangford.

Downpatrick Cathedral is thought to be the resting place of St Patrick.and ther are many ancient and historic buildings worth a vist and a dedicated heritage centre named after the saint.

The gorgeous National Trust properties of Rowallene Gardens in Saintfield and Mountstewart Gardens in Greyabbey are just a leisurely drive away, as is the historic town of Killyleagh with it's fairy tale castle.

For the more adventurous a 30 minute drive will take you to into the heart of the majestic Mourne Mountains where hiking tracks for all abilities can be followed. Alternatively, a range of activities can be enjoyed on the golden beaches of Newcastle where the' Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea'.

A 45 minute drive takes you to the bright lights and bustle of Belfast where there are many big brand shops, shopping centres, restaurants and nightlife.


Mallard Cottage is approximately 5 mins from Strangford village. The picturesque village with it's ancient harbour lies on the eastern, inner shores of Strangford Lough on the edge of the pretty County Down countryside.

Strangford Lough is a Marine Nature Reserve and boasts truly stunning scenery, and some of the richest marine and coastal wildlife in the whole of Europe. Throughout the summer visitors and locals enjoy a range of water based activities such as yachting, fishing, canoeing and other outdoor pursuits.

The majestic ferry makes its way back and forth between Strangford harbour and Portaferry linking the two sides of the lough and allowing visitors to explore the whole of the Ards Penninsula including the Exploris Aquarium, Mount Stewart National Trust property and pretty beaches, villages and antique shops.

For the golfers - Ardglass Golf Club is a 10 minute drive - Royal Co Down Golf Club is a 25 minute drive and Downpatrick Golf Club a 5 minute drive.

The area is heaven for walkers. Both the Lecale Way and the Ulster Way walking networks wind their way through the area. Signposted walks take you from the village along the shoreline past an ancient Norman Castle and on to grounds of the awe inspiring National Trust property at Castle Ward. The property includes an18th century mansion, over 820 acres of walled demesne and paths, a picturesque farmyard with bikes and canoes to rent and numerous beauty spots to picnic or BBQ. There is a very pleasant walk from Mallard Cottage through the grounds of Castle Ward and into Strangford Village.

Strangford village has several pubs which regularly host traditional music sessions, a restaurant, cafe, pharmacy and grocery stores. There are loads of exciting events to enjoy, particularly in high season.

The cottage is supplied with maps and local information and we are always on hand to make sure you get the very best out of your stay.
