The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
Bruern is fortunate to be within twenty miles of Oxford, whose colleges and chapels, most of which are open to visitors, boast one of the finest concentrations of medieval European architecture to be found anywhere. Also as a result of the University connection, Oxford also has several world-renowned museums and galleries, in which a large part of the private collections of the colleges are on display.
However, there are also many lesser-known treasuries of esoteric knowledge to be discovered. These are all within an hour or so of Bruern, and cater for diverse interests: from local history to regimental histories, from pottery to perfumery, from working Victorian farms to miniature model villages and steam railways.
Stow on the Wold area
The Gloucestershire Way is a 100 mile long walk, mainly on footpaths and bridleways. It starts at the historic border crossing at Chepstow and finishes at the Abbey at Tewkesbury.
Local places to visit include:
Cotswold Wild Life Park, Burford. (01993 823006) - Home to a varied collection of mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates, from ants to white rhinos and bats to big cats. Asiatic lions and Amur leopards. Other animal highlights include meerkats, Lar gibbons and Siamang gibbons. Many are endangered species. All set in the large parkland surroundings.
Birdland, Bourton-on-the-Water. (01451 820480) - Set amongst seven acres of woodland, gardens ponds and rivers see some of the worlds most exotic and rare birds. The River Windrush runs through the Park forming a natural habitat for Flamingos, Pelicans and Storks as well as an abundance of waterfowl. The colony of Penguins is an experience, especially at feeding time.
How to get there
The cottage is located half an hour from Oxford either by car or train.
By road from the South-west of the UK:
From the M5 at exit 13, take the A419 to Cirencester, then the B4425 to Burford in the Cotswolds.
At Burford, travel down the High Street, to where the road crosses a single-lane bridge controlled by traffic lights. Just over the bridge, turn left at the mini-roundabout, following the signs for Stow and the A424.
After approximately 3 miles, at the crest of the hill, there will be a sign marked 'Bruern single-track road'. Turn right. The single-track road will begin to descend into the Evenlode Valley. After approximately a third of a mile, make a turn right at the broken crossroads, and then immediately left. Carry on in the same easterly direction.
After approximately 2 miles, there will be a turning to the right, signposted Milton-under-Wychwood. Do not take this turning, but carry on across the junction. Bruern Abbey is three quarters of a mile further on, and is visible to the right of the road. Bruern Holiday Cottages are on the left-hand side of the road, opposite the entrance to Bruern Abbey. The entrance to the car park is to the left of the entrance to the Stable Yard.

The terraces on each side are perfectly positioned to get sun in the morning and afternoon, and there's enough space and sufficient hidden corners not to feel claustrophobic, even in a crowd. Children will love the swing and seesaw; grown-ups will enjoy croquet, reading in the hammock or a barbecue on the terrace off the kitchen.
