The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region

The area around Throstle Nest Farmhouse offers a wealth of exciting activities, whatever your interests. The Peak District is renowned as one of the UK's best destinations for walkers, and there are many walks directly from the doorstep of Throstle Nest by just continuing down the lane, passed the Hen Hut. By venturing down the lane you will find the paths that lead you to Dam Flask reservoir and Low Bradfield. We have provided you a good selection of books containing walks in the Peak District. Please feel free to take these with you on yours walks but remember to leave them behind in the barn for the next guests!

The Peak District is well known as a favourite region for cyclists of all kinds; the ruggedly diverse terrain represents an excellent training challenge for a number of road cycling clubs on weekends throughout the year, and supports a wealth of scenic cycle-routes which run through the heart of the breathtaking countryside. Apart from mountain biking and road cycling, there are a number of special walking and cycling trails which follow the routes of old railway lines through the spectacular scenery of the Peak and are free to use and ideal for all the family. One of the most popular cycle routes lies in the south of the area, where riders can enjoy the recently constructed circular route around Carsington Water, which follows the gentle contours of the shoreline through a sylvan landscape of pleasantly wooded slopes for ten miles. The visitor centre complex has cycles for hire, and boasts a café, shop and full amenities.

Serious shoppers, meanwhile, should visit Meadowhall. With over 240 stores and 30 restaurants, the centre houses large department stores such as Bhs, House of Fraser and Debenhams and also contains a large food court - the "Oasis" - modelled on an Italian piazza, with a steel dome and access to a Vue cinema. There is also a section near The Oasis for small independent retails, The Lanes.

Storrs area

The small hamlet of Storrs is idyllically situated between the Rivelin Valley and Bradfield Dale, on the edge of the picturesque Peak District National Park. Nearly 700 lime trees line the Rivelin Valley, making it the second longest lime tree avenue in Britain! This peaceful hamlet holds a scattering of farms and dwellings together with many bridleways and footpaths to discover. Nearby, the impressive Damflask, Agden, Dale Dike and Ladybower dams make for an interesting afternoon's ramble, while the attractive village of Hathersage is also within easy reach, thought to be the inspiration for Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and home to a selection of shops, pubs and inviting eateries. With the striking village of Edale, the start of the Pennine Way, close by, and the lively city of Sheffield within a short drive, this is an ideal location for an enjoyable holiday at any time of year.
