Northern England region

Any visitor to the county of Yorkshire will probably be aware of the historic city of York, which has huge cultural significance across the whole of Europe. York has an ancient past stretching back to Roman times and the city has managed to retain its magnificent architecture through the ages from this time, when it has variously been a major settlement for the Vikings and a focal point in medieval Britain. Dominating the city is York Minster which is Europe's largest Gothic cathedral and miles of city walls which go back to the 13th century. York today is a great mix of historical buildings, impressive architecture and a modern vibrant city with superb shops, cafes, restaurants and visitor attractions. To the south and east of York lies the Yorkshire Wolds; an area of gentle rolling hills, picturesque villages and busy market towns, making just the perfect place for relaxed breaks, easy walking, great cycling routes and plenty of sightseeing at historic stately homes.

Stokesley is situated three miles from Byre Cottage and offers great shops and restaurants whilst taking in the history of this delightful market town. Great Ayton is situated a few miles further from Dairy Cottage and offers great attractions such as The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum where you can learn all about Captain Cook's adventures. It is also based within the North York Moors which offers plenty of different types of activities. There are many different types of walks to choose from that situate within this National Park. Guided walks are also available and dedicated routes for people walking with dogs. A variety of cycling routes are also found that range in difficulty to suit all abilities. There is a huge list of different outdoor activities that can be enjoyed on the North York Moors such as water sports, horse riding, motor sports and air sports – which are just to name a few! For those who prefer to take in sights and history in a slightly different fashion, there are also a huge variety of attractions to suit you. There are plenty of museums such as Captain Cook Memorial Museum and Farming Flashback where you can observe farming machinery. Other attractions include Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, Staintondale Shire horse Farm and Scarborough Sea life and Marine Sanctuary.
