Stoke-on-Trent

Alton is noted for the theme park Alton Towers, built around the site of Alton Mansion (also named Alton Abbey or Alton Towers), which was owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury. The village is located on the eastern side of the Churnet valley. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and contains numerous buildings of architectural interest; the Round-House, Alton Castle (now a Catholic youth retreat centre), St Peter's Church, The Malt House, St John's Church and Alton Towers.

Stoke-on-Trent is considered to be the home of the pottery industry in England and is commonly known as The Potteries. The city's world-class ceramics collection is housed in the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Hanley. Etruria Industrial Museum on the Caldon Canal, and Gladstone Pottery Museum in a former potbank in Longton are dedicated to the city's industrial heritage. Most of the major pottery companies based in Stoke-on-Trent have factory shops and visitor centres. Trentham Gardens is located on the southern fringe of the city along with the monkey forest, the first of its kind in England. Visitors can roam through the monkey park where 140 Barbary Macaque monkeys wander free in the woodlands. There are no fences in place to stop the monkeys from interacting with the visitors, although it is against park rules to touch the animals and wardens are on standby to ensure the safety of the visitors

There is a wealth of attractions and places of interest in the area - something for everybody!
