L270 - The Bathing House
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 3
on the 550 acre, Capability Brown-designed Sharpham Estate (vineyard - wine tasting, seasonal café) 2 miles from Ashprington (½ mile rough track), on a sylvan bend of the river Dart, is a Grade II* Georgian bathing house, secluded in trees with only an occasionally occupied boathouse as neighbour. You are welcome to use the outdoor swimming pool (26' 3'' x 16' 5'' x 3' 3'' to 6' 6'' deep, June to end of August, daylight hours), wander parts of the estate and explore the gardens. The most idyllic, tranquil situation with views to wooded banks all around, a riverside terrace (table/chairs, fishing - sea bass) and steps down to the river (gated) with only lapping water and passing canoes, boats and the occasional seal to disturb. A wildlife haven (birdwatching).
Eight steps (handrail) down to terrace and simple beamed kitchen (solid fuel range, electric cooker, larder fridge) with spectacular river views (in the very rare event of high spring tides and bad weather, the kitchen floor may flood temporarily, which the caretaking team will resolve). Washer-drier and freezer in shed. Step up to small bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) with low head height (6' maximum). Upstairs, two bedrooms – through a small single to a double (footboard) with glazed door to small balcony and fabulous water views. Up more stairs to living room - the original octagonal bathing house with high ceilings, ornate plaster work, woodburner and windows looking up and down the river. Binoculars provided (no TV). Spring water. All proceeds to the Sharpham Trust educational charity. A simple, romantic retreat in which to unwind and reflect.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
Ashprington: pretty village with good food pubs, straddling Bow Creek, a tributary of the river Dart. Totnes (very attractive old town on the Dart), 3 miles. Dartmouth (town) and golf, 8 miles.

"A Little Piece of Heaven on Earth."
Quite literally on the banks of the River Dart and hidden in the wonderful Devon countryside the Bathing house is truly a magical place. A true 'get away from it all' location; tranquil, sub… More
Thank you for your very kind feedback about The Bathing House. I'm really glad that you so enjoyed your stay. It is a place of some renown as being a comfortable, beautiful and magical property; perfect for a much needed rest. We're always surprised by how secluded it is, whilst still being very well placed to enjoy the South Hams. Thank you for the suggestion for improvement, which we will pass on to the Sharpham Estate. I hope we can welcome you back soon.
