The Sardinia region

Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia with its app. 1.800 kilometres of coastline, is one of the most popular destinations for people who love aquatic sports and seaside holidays, not only for its natural beauty and geographical position but also for its history.

It is neither a coincidence nor a fashion that nowadays Sardinia is the preferred destination for many tourists. The sea around this large Mediterranean Island (second only to Sicily in size among all Mediterranean Islands) is among the most beautiful and transparent in all the world. In fact D.H. Lawrence in his famous book 'The Sea and Sardinia' wrote that Sardinia was a land like no other and the Sardinian writer, Marcello Serra entitled one of his famous books "Sardinia: Almost a Continent", in order to underline the uniqueness of the Sardinian landscapes and the large and deep differences among the Island's various regions which make Sardinia similar to a continent.

In fact the Sardinian people are renowned for their spontaneous hospitality, and like all islanders thirst for contact with the external world.

People who visit Sardinia discover not only one of the most beautiful and original places in the world but also have an unforgettable holiday. Sardinia offers visitors an array of gastronomic specialities from the ancient cooking traditions of the shepherds to the sea food specialities of the coast. Sardinia is rich in both handicrafts and arts, its carpets, baskets, pottery and its gold filigree jewellery are both unique and of the highest quality.

Sardinian towns and cities, especially those along the coast, have a rich tradition of fish and sea food while inland towns and cities are known for game and farm produce. Over the centuries the mixing of these traditions has evolved into a unique gastronomic experience. Olbia, Stintino, Castelsardo, Alghero, Bosa and Oristano are some of towns where one can try this cuisine. Cagliari is one of Italy's main fishing ports and it is not surprising that its gastronomic traditions are based on sea food and fish.

Stintino area

The origins of Stintino date back to 1885 and a settlement of 45 families, prevalently tied down to fishing who came from Asinara Island. Previously, the territory was populated by the distinct shepherds' settlements who used to live in natural shelters.

The village became an autonomous municipality the 10th of August, 1988. The first elections and the appointment of the town council took place in March 1989.

The village is developed inside two inlets where small harbours are situated. They are side by side, the old port called "Minori" (small) and a new port called "Mannu" (big).

Many events and entertainment are organised for tourists and residents during the summer season. Among the important annual festivals is a boat race at the end of August called "Regata della vela latina". We also recommend visiting the museum Tonnara at the new port.

The most famous beach is called "La Pelosa" but there are others, equally as nice, like "Saline", "Puzzona" and "Ezzi Mannu". "Pelosa" beach is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Its water is so delightful; it's difficult to find another place like it in Italy. Its turquoise colour, transparency and the finest white sand render "Pelosa" beach more similar to tropical places rather than Mediterranean ones. Apart from the lack of tropical fish, a particular type of vegetation makes you remember that you are in Sardinia: the Mediterranean underbrush, present even on the beach.

The most important events handed down from Stintino's cultural tradition are: rural feast of St. Isidore in May, Tuna Fest (Sagra del Tonno) in June, Latin Sail Boat Race (Regata della Vela Latina) the last week of August, the feast of the Blessed Virgin of Didesa in September and the feast of St. Nicholas at the end of September.
This splendid locality offers numerous occasions for entertainment, both of sporting character (sailing, windsurfing, golfing, tennis, hiking, horse riding, etc.) and of a cultural nature (music concerts, exhibitions, museums, etc.).

Guestbook for Villa Katia

Just a quick note to thank you so much for the use of your holiday villa. All the facilities and home comforts in the villa really made this a very special holiday. Stintino itself is just the right balance for us – a quiet fishing village, but with plenty of local character. Obviously the beaches were terrific and we also managed to get to Argententiera – “The Scooby Doo” Silver Mine, Bosa (Beautiful), Alghero, Sassari and the Neptune Grotto. A thoroughly well rounded and highly enjoyable holiday – thanks once again it was a pleasure dealing with you.

I wanted to let you know that we had a fantastic time in Sardinia beginning of October. Your house is wonderful and especially great if you have children thanks to all the toys!
Thank you very much. We will definitely come again.
Sandra (UK)

Just a note to say thank you. We had a lovely time at Villa Katia and Stintino.
Laura

Many thanks for a great holiday. The house was fantastic, very clean and well equipped. The location superb, sitting outside looking at and listening to the sea was so very relaxing. The weather was a bit variable, but it was nearly November so we weren't too surprised. We still managed to go to the fantastic beach every day.
