The province of Sassari: there is not an inch of the province that is not well worth a visit......
The province of Sassari is Sardinia's second largest province, comprising coasts and gentle hilly landscape. The coastal route to discover this province starts in Alghero, which still preserves part of its history in its architecture and language. The route continues in Nurra, where we find Argentiera, a silver mine overlooking a shore with strong cliffs, then continues to Punta Falcone, which faces the island of Asinara. A little further ahead, in the municipality of Stintino, the magnificent Pelosa beach opens up in front of you. Continuing along the coast you will reach Porto Torres, the ancient Turris Libisonis, whose history is told in the local museum. This is also the point where a long series of beaches start which skirt the territory of Sassari and Sorso. In Sorso you find the marvelous beach of Platamona. You will then arrive in the typical village of Castelsardo, which has a centuries-old tradition to narrate.
Our coastal route then concludes with the shores of Valledoria, which are equally well known and well worth a stop.
The city of Sassari with its 138,000 inhabitants is the capital of the province. It was probably founded by the populations who escaped from the coast, especially from Porto Torres, and boasts an old town centre of medieval origins, a cathedral with a baroque façade recalling the splendor of Spanish religiousness, a 19th-century neighborhood developing around Piazza d’Italia, an important archaeological museum and several top folk events such as the Sardinian Cavalcade (in May) and the Candelieri (14 August), which are also celebrated in Ploaghe and Nulvi.
The province of Sassari has more to offer than just its coasts, however. It has a wealth of lakes, age-old forests, thermal baths and archaeological sites. Examples of its history are the Sa Coveccada dolmen in Mores, the domus de janas of Sant’Andrea Priu in Bonorva (burial chambers excavated in the rock where the dead were buried), the Sun Altar of Monte Accoddi, dating back to roughly 5000 years ago (along the road from Sassari to Porto Torres), the Reggia Nuragica of Santu Antine in Torralba and the Palmavera nuraghe between Alghero and Porto Conte.
The province of Sassari also boasts splendid Romanesque/Pisan basilicas such as the Trinità di Saccargia, San Pietro di Sorres, Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio and Nostra Signora del Regno in Ardara. The Iberian rule left robust towers scattered over the shores, the fortifications of Alghero as well as the Sassari cathedral from the 17th century.
The province of Sassari as also preserved a series of particularly striking events, ranging from “Sant’Antonio del Fuoco” in January to the ceremonies of Holy Week in Castelsardo and Alghero or the Ardia in Pozzomaggiore (a daring contest between horsemen).
However, gastronomy also plays an important role in the Sassari province: cheese-stuffed ravioli, pasta and rice dishes made with seafood or tuna roe (bottarga), lobsters, but also dishes like boiled mutton, cheese, meat, fish and pastries, and, last but not least, liqueurs and grappas.
Sheep breeding represents an important element of the province’s dairy industry; this is also thanks to the production of Pecorino Romano (in Thiesi) and the products of the individual villages. Not to be forgotten are also the various wine growers’ cooperatives in Santa Maria La Palma, Alghero, Sorso, Bonnannaro, Florinas and others, as well as the wine production of private growers.
Crafts, producing textiles, baskets, pottery, carved wood, crafted bone, jewelry, corals and knives, also play an important role for the local economy. The Padiglione dell’Artigianato in Sassari is often the venue for exhibitions of authentic crafts. The province of Sassari is also rich in mineral waters that are used for thermal facilities, as in Benetutti and Casteldoria, where you can spend truly relaxing vacations.
A large part of the archaeological heritage mentioned above has been collected and put on display in the various museums of the province, ranging from the National Archaeological Museum G.A.Sanna in Sassari to those in Ittireddu, Torralba, Perfugas, Porto Torres and Padria.
Springs in the reagion are moderately rainy and temperatures are pleasant. Summers are dry, hot, with temperatures dropping at night.

The Stintino / Roccaruja area
The small marine village of Stintino was founded in 1885, when the inhabitants of the island of Asinara had to leave to allow the construction of a lazaret and a penal colony.
Stintino still preserves the character of a fishermen’s village, even if the fishing activity has reduced considerably and the village has become a renowned tourist resort.
It is located at the northwestern tip of Sardinia, around a deep bay with a port for fishing boats and a narrow fjord containing a yachting port for the numerous sportscrafts that come here during the long tourist season.
The marvelous beaches of La Pelosa and Saline have made Stintino one of the favourite tourist destinations. Just before arriving in Stintino, you will pass Stagno di Casaraccio pond and the 19th-century architectural complex of the Tonnara, a tuna fishery now transformed into a holiday village. The Museo della Tonnara in Stintino, which presents the history of the Tonnara Saline, is worth a visit. There are also a large number of religious events such as the feast of Sant’Isidoro in May in Ercoli, where you find a small rural church. On 8 September, Stintino celebrates Our Lady of Defense (Madonna della Difesa), the village’s patron saint, with a striking procession at sea. On the same day, a rowing competition, Palio remiero, takes place, commemorating the races that the old tuna fishermen held with their rowing boats. In mid-September, the hamlet of Pozzo San Nicola celebrates its patron saint with religious as well as folkloristic events and the traditional Sagra della Pecora (Sheep Festival). In summer, there are numerous events featuring street performances. At the end of August, historical wooden boats equipped with a "latin sail" rig engage in two days sailing competition.
The area around Stintino is great for walking, trekking, cycling and swimming. The Pelosa beach is perfect for children as the water is shallow for several metres from the beach.
Also, at walking distance there are diving, sailing and windsurfing schools, and the possibility to get on a saling boat to visit the beautiful natural parc on the Asinara island. Alternatively you can reach the island by ferry from the main village of Stintino or with fishermen on their boat and experience fishing and eating the fish just caught.

The villa is charming and well appointed, but obviously not new. The kitchen is very small, but this is offset by large living areas, fantastic panoramic views and convenient access to all facilities, as well as the beach. There is no WiFi, nor in the surrounding restaurants and bars...which was a hassle at times. Stintino village is small and charming with a clear focus on family holidays. In July at least there is no meaningful nightlife for kids in their late teens. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Do not think you find a quiet sandy beach as in the pictures! The reality is a sea of sun umbrellas and thousands of people! But they are all removed by photoshop for all of the brochures, post cards and location shots!!!! (The same applies tio all the surrounding beaches that we visited!) The rocky areas near the castle offer some peace and quiet as well as good snorkelling! Overall we had a great stay. |
