The Loire Valley / Indre region

Situated in the Southernmost area of the Loire Valley on the border of the Indre/Limousin depts 36 and 23 (Centre). The climate in the summer months is good and is warmer than that of northern France and the UK. Ideal for those who like plenty of sunshine but without the fierce heat of southern France. The central region is rural and still unspoilt being a mainly farming area and has many historic towns and places of general interest for visitors.
The Ste Severe sur Indre / Les Claudits area
There are many local places of interest of both ancient and modern history and many leisure or sporting activities close by. The immediate area provides excellent golf, fishing, water sports, llama trekking, cycling, walking and much more. Slightly further afield (under an hour) there are more historic or leisure places to visit i.e. volcano park, water park, wolf park and maze to mention a few.
There are weekly brocantes all over the region during summer and the lovely town of La Chatre has a lively weekly market as does Boussac our nearest town a few minutes away. There are excellent restaurants in this area to suit all tastes and pockets.

My husband and two chocolate labradors have stayed at thistledew for the past 3 years, and would be again if i hadnt had an operation and cannot make the stairs now. We all found the gite quite lovely and madam Dupre a very helpful lady and could not do enough for us,and was always on hand to help in any way she could she also made a lovely welcoming meal for when we arrived, also stocked up the fridge with essentials that we might need to start our holiday off well. Thistledew is a lovely quiet and restful place to unwind and enjoy that part of france at our leisure, and we have some lovely memorys of our stay there. |

We booked this cottage for a peaceful holiday, away from the busiest tourist areas. It delivered exactly what was required - an opportunity to sample french rural living. Because of it's rural location, a car is essential if you want to get out and about, but the countryside is a joy to drive through. Few of the shop keepers spoke english, so it's a good opportunity to practice your French. The cottage is situated close enough to small villages and towns, to be able to sample French life. A relatively short car journey will take you to medaevil towns and castles which were reasonably quiet and entertained the children, as well as providing really interesting days out. There are lots of sporting opportunities close by if your children like the outdoors and the pool at the cottage is big enough to allow you to enjoy a swim or just to 'play' when the sun shines. Mme Dupre was the idea hostess - very friendly and helpful. She cooked us a lovely meal on our arrival, which was very welcome after a long drive. The cottage is well furnished and has everything you would require. When we were there (July '11), there was no internet access - which wasn't necessarily a bad thing - but teenagers may be disappointed by this. Remember if you arrive on a Saturday that the shops all close on Sunday, so make sure you have some provisions to keep you going over the weekend!!! Our daughter uses a wheelchair and the ground floor is accessible, although the downstairs family bathroom is not fully adapted and all the bedrooms are upstairs. We knew before we went that the house wasn't fully adapted and that we would have to support my daughter, but an older adult or heavier child with physical disabilities may not be able to be accommodated. Mme Dupre was very helpful in the information she provided before we went, to help us decide what would be suitable. All in all, an excellent holiday and somewhere we would consider returning to. |
