The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne region in Southwest France is an area of outstanding natural beauty, steeped in history. Dubbed the valley of the thousand castles and boasting a wealth of prehistoric caves and cave paintings, history literally seeps from the rock.

The local people are very friendly and there are endless activities for all the family in the surrounding area, from canoeing and water sports on the Dordogne river, to golf, horse-riding, cycling and hiking. There are many historic sites, areas of natural beauty, prehistoric caves, chateaux, gardens etc.

Lots for younger children also, with the Aquarium and the Village du Bournat in Le Bugue and the nearby Jacquou Parc with its water park, amusement rides and animals.

A delight for those enjoying good food and wine. Wine tasting opportunities in local chateaux, or follow the famous wine trail. Suberb restaurants within a fifteen minute drive serving the best regional cuisine.

Ste Alvere

Sainte Alvere itself is a typically French village, once dominated by a huge castle destroyed in the revolution, today Ste Alvere is famous for its winter truffle market. Centrally located between Bergerac and the capital of the Dordogne, Perigueux, it is an ideal location for basing a holidays, with all of the attractions under an hour's drive, yet you are still away from the hustle and bustle of high season that affects the bigger towns. At the end of the day, you can retreat to the total privacy of the house and its pool for a holiday with total relaxation.

The 10 x 5 meter decked swimming pool is a suntrap. Located a short stroll above and behind the house, it offers total privacy and spectacular views across the Dordogne countryside. There is also a shaded pergola with table and chairs.

The house itself has outdoor seating areas on three sides including the enclosed kitchen garden with barbeque, seating for twelve and fresh growing herbs. There is also a relaxing spot to sit out by the original stone fishpond.

Indoors, there is satellite TV with British channels, a Nintendo Wii, a library of books DVDs and videos, and a selection of toys and games to keep the young ones amused.

There are three acres of mature gardens to explore including a woodland walk (where you may spot the occasional wild deer), numerous tree species (many fruit trees) and an ancient truffle hunter's hut (it is rumoured that there are truffles on the land).

Close to the house, there are two sets of steps down to the village road, so it is just a short stroll to the bar, restaurant, markets and shops of Sainte Alvere.

Just over the road from the house is the municipal sports ground with football pitch and tennis courts.

Maison des Reves is situated in an idyllic location. Superbly appointed, offering privacy and peace and quiet, whilst maintaining a heart of the village location. Many facilities on the doorstep, boulangeries, small supermarket, butcher, restaurant, bar, bank with ATM, a tourist office and more. There is a busy weekly farmers' market in the square and many others close by. Also various night markets to sample local food, wine and music, throughout high season.

"The House of Dreams it truly is!"

We stayed in this amazing villa and aptly named 'Maison Des Reves' ('House of Dreams') for a two-week holiday. The house and the grounds are incredible and are completely private. You can go for a nice long walk in the grounds, there is so much space. The swimming pool area is a suntrap with incredible views of the surrounding countryside. We had the most relaxing holiday that we have had in years. St Alvere is a quaint and typically French village and the people are very friendly. The weekly market is certainly worth a visit and you should try out each boulangerie for all the different tasting bread. The homegrown vegetable shop is the place to go for fresh fruit and veg. The restaurants in the village are worth a visit. St. Alvere is an ideal location for touring the Dordogne region. We would recommend a car to get around and there is plenty to do e.g. Chateaux's, Vineyard visits, the Aquarium, Prehistoric Caves, tennis, cycling, foie grais farm visits and so much more. We would recommend this villa to anyone looking for some rest and relaxation and it's suitable for all holiday makers including couples, groups and families with children etc. We came home rejuvenated and we will definitely be back!
