L189 - The Providence Inn
Cottage | 6 bedrooms | sleeps 16
in the heart of East Prawle and once a village pub dating back to the 18th cent., a smart and spacious home cleverly converted to provide both character and contemporary comfort. A few hints of its former life remain, including a generous, beamed, open-plan room downstairs (once the bar and still complete with games tables and big open fire with slate hearth) and, behind, a sunny lawned garden (table/chairs, picnic benches, barbecue). On three levels, The Providence Inn is now a thoroughly modern, efficient and stylish home with plenty of room, fabulous for gatherings of families or friends. From small paved area at the front (one neighbouring attached property), door into large, U-shaped living room (TV/DVD, iPod dock) with big comfy sofas, high-backed bench, window seats, pool table, bar football, fruit machine. Step up to dining room with long table (for 12) and side table (for 4); further step up to smart kitchen (dishwasher, two combi-microwaves, big American-style fridge-freezer, two ovens), well-equipped for group catering. Utility room (washing machine, tumble drier); ground-floor shower-room (suite); rear hall with coat/boot storage - doors to the garden from here and all main rooms (steps up from dining room). Wood-effect floor downstairs.
From living room, stairs up to first floor and five bedrooms, all with smart decor, carpeted – the master double (5' bed, TV/DVD, PlayStation) with en suite shower-room (suite) and balcony (sofa, table/chairs for indoor or outdoor use) with superb panoramic views over the village to the sea beyond; all with wooden shutters, three more neat doubles (each with 5' bed, one with TV/DVD and sea views, one with VDU/DVD), and a large room with two sets of full-size bunks. Family bathroom (suite with large, deep bath plus bath-shower). Further stairs up into large attic family bedroom (two doubles, one 2'6” single, one 2'6” mattress and child's cot bed) with apex beams, Velux windows, some sloping ceilings, no door. Damages Deposit £250. An excellent place for fun gatherings year-round; handy village location with pub, shop and beautiful coastline nearby. Best for maximum of 10 adults and assorted children.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
East Prawle: village (shop, pub, good food café) a mile from the sea in the middle of an unspoilt peninsula (farmland, cliffs, coves, beaches). Superb scenery, cliff-birdwatching and walks - coast path to little sandy cove beaches (nearest 1 mile). East Portlemouth (small village, ferry to Salcombe), easy 3½ mile walk. Kingsbridge by road, 9 miles.
