Villa | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Villa Panos, (Upper) Stalos, Crete
A charming stone and pastel colour-washed Villa prettily perched on the side of a green hillside above the village of Upper (Panos) Stalos, this three bedroom Villa, with its private terrace and oversized pool, is all about easy 'holiday living', with sea and mountain views which are a sheer joy to wake up to.
A feature of the open plan living area of this Villa is its attractive wood beamed ceilings, lightly touched with emerald wood stain, a colour scheme threading throughout the Villa and one which links the interior to the exterior garden and surrounding hills.
The simple sitting area has comfortable padded bench seating either side of a fireplace and French doors which open to a covered terrace decorated with potted plants and furnished for outside living with rattan sofa and chairs. A stone arch spans three wide tiled steps that lead up to the kitchen/dining area where amongst the kitchen cupboards you'll find a dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer and all the usual paraphernalia of cooking. Close by is a white marble topped table for dining inside. Although the wooden pergola outside is probably where you will do most dining, in the shade & even have a go at a barbecue of an evening whilst listening to the pool gurgling.
There is a ground floor twin bedroom with windows overlooking the pool and the bonus of french doors to a small patio that leads onto the pool terrace for that early morning swim. There is also a smart shower room and WC on the ground floor with washing machine.
On the first floor, two bedrooms lead from a central landing. Both the double and twin bedrooms feature iron bedsteads with deep and comfortable mattresses to ensure a good night's sleep. We have noted that you can actually see the sea whilst laying in either beds, a bonus if you are having a late morning in bed. The twin bedroom has a smart ensuite shower room with airjet attachments in the cabin style shower cubical whilst the double bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a large Jacuzzi bath.
Both bedrooms have French doors opening to a spacious balcony furnished with a table and chairs with beautiful far reaching sea and mountain views. In the evening, this balcony is the spot to sit under the stars & gaze at the twinkling lights of Chania town whilst enjoying a nightcap or two.
At the front of the Villa, there is a pretty garden over spilling with sweet smelling flowers and shrubs and covered terrace with wicker furniture if in need of some shade or just a quiet area to get into a good book.
The freeform pool, situated to the side of the Villa is arguably a little over large for the size of the Villa, at approx. 10m x 5m however, we can't imagine anyone could find this a problem as there is still space on the terracotta sun terrace for sunbeds and umbrellas, quite private from neighbouring properties and with lovely views to the hills.
900m down the hill is the village of Uppper (Panos) Stalos where there are 2 excellent tavernas and a minimarket. The beach at Stalos is a 5 mins drive and Chania's beautiful Venetian harbour approx. 15 mins drive away.

The Chania Prefecture region
7 km west of Chania, the village of Lower Stalos fringes a long, sandy beach with the island of Theodorou, said to be a petrified sea monster, rising from the sea just a short distance off shore. There are numerous small pensions and apartments as well as half a dozen convenient little mini-markets and an excellent little patisserie, selling delicious fresh baguettes and croissants. There are also a number of waterside tavernas with shady terraces overlooking the sea and teenagers can chill out at one of the atmospheric palm thatched beach bars. 1km inland the small village of Upper Stalos nestles serenely on the hillside amidst a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves.
Here you will find a slower pace of life as well as a couple of the best local tavernas in the area, both certainly worth a visit or two.

"We have just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks holiday in Stalos. The area itself is ideal, not too busy but having a good choice of Tavernas and small shops. We hired a car and enjoyed a couple of trips out to Falassarna (North west, about 45 mins drive) and through the mountains to Elafonisi, Southwest about 2hrs drive). There is a regular bus service into Chania, about 20 mins drive and there is also a great water park within about a half hour drive where we spent a very enjoyable day. We would thoroughly recommend Stalos & Crete as a holiday destination !"
