Stainton is a beautiful small village 2 miles from the M6 and 3 miles from the most romantic Lake Ullswater.
The village has an excellent pub, The Kings Arms serving good quality food,a very friendly hotel, The Brantwood, again serving excellent good value food.
There is a farm shop selling local produce and also serving excellent food. In the village is a post office and shop connected to the local pub.
Locally is the famous Rheghed Centre which has shops, multiplex cinema and local festivals. Only 400 yards from the house is the Alpaca Centre which is great for children and adults.
The town of Penrith is only a couple of miles away, it is a market town with plenty of shops and restaurants. There is a famous market held near Penrith every Saturday morning.

"Quiet luxury in a lovely village setting close to all the Lake District had to offer"
We spent a fabulous weekend in Smithy house enjoying the wonderfully warm lounge log fire and sitting round the country dining room eating and drinking after a hard days walking
The house is beautifully appointed with top quality fittings and original artwork
The local village has a great hotel that served the best rack if lamb I've ever eaten
The location is excellent for the local pub just a few minutes walk and close to the lakes which need a short journey by car or cycle which we did as keen bikers
Highly recommended for the energetic and also those who
Just want to relax

"A beautiful home, we did not want to leave!"
We have just come back from a glorious break in Smithy House. From the moment we arrived we felt right at home. The owners know exactly how to make you feel welcome - a homemade pot of jam and hand written note greeted us as well as an offer of a drink from their selection.
The house is luxurious but cosy too. Lots of space in all of the bedrooms and each room has its own charm. The area is great too we visited Ullswater lake for the day followed by a walk up to the waterfalls. The kitchen is huge and well stocked with everything you would need to make a family meal. It was the perfect place to spend time with the family.
The beds were lovely and comfortable and absolutely spotless thought the house. The welcome book gives you all the info you could need for your stay.
Colin, the owner was great to deal with when booking, he made everything go smoothly and offered tips of where to eat out. He was also very kind to let us check out a little later with it being Father's Day - this made a huge difference to our last day.
I couldn't recommend this house enough an absolute pleasure, we really hope to return!

"It felt like home !"
As soon as we arrived I knew we were going to enjoy our stay at Smithy House. Myself and my partner arrived on Good Friday along with my two sisters and my brother-in-law, to a cozy welcoming place to stay. We walked everyday with my sisters cocker spaniels, Jasper and Benson, always finding a new walk each with equally stunning views. The snow-capped peaks were awesome. We enjoyed a lovely meal at the local pub and we also enjoyed visits to Ambleside and Grasmere. Smithy House is a beautiful place with everything you could possibly need. The beds were very comfortable, so important when your away from home. The house was superb for what we wanted. We had lots of fun and made lots of memories. Thankyou to Colin for the excellent communication during booking.
