The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The Salzkammergut is Austria's lake district. There are 76 lakes surrounded by stunning mountains and unspoilt villages and Lake Wolfgangsee is in the heart of this area. From here it is easy to explore the whole of the Salzkammergut either by hiring a car or using the good, reliable public transport. The area has much to offer in all four seasons with excellent walking, cycling, water sports and golf. In winter the scenery is breathtaking and the area offers every winter activity you can think of. This region has it all - great scenery, sites of historical interest such as Hallstatt, fun places to visit including the salt mines and the trick water fountains at Hellbrunn - and Salzburg is just an hour away.
St Wolfgang area
Where else but in the centre of St Wolfgang could you start your day with a fine breakfast whilst listening to local music, then soar into the air over the lake in a hot air balloon, before taking the cog railway to the top of the Shafberg Mountain for a stunning view of the surrounding lakes and mountains and then wine and dine watching the sunset from the legendary White Horse in the the evening or watch the operetta of the same name! Or at Christmas time, enjoy the Christmas Market with individual wooden stalls selling home made gifts, decorations and specialty traditional foods. Or explore the local area where The Sound of Music was filmed, visit Salzburg, the salt mines or the spa town of Bad Ischl.
In the heart of the Austrian Lakes District, St Wolfgang is one of the most popular resorts in the whole of Austria. This charming and historic village is in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Wolfgangsee (Lake Wolfgang). Our apartment is right in the centre near the ancient pilgrimage church, frescoed buildings, shops and cafes off cobbled streets, where you can enjoy Austrian delicacies such as Apfel Strudel and where there are such an array of cakes you just won’t know where to begin!
Opposite our apartment is the White Horse Inn made famous by the Operetta of the same name. Music is very important to St Wolfgang - every night in the summer there are light classical, folklore and operatic concerts and twice weekly there are brass band concerts in the village square. Sit in a nearby café and enjoy the concerts along with a cool beer or wine, or if you prefer to stay in you can sit in the apartment, open the windows and enjoy a musical accompaniment to your evening meal!
In winter, as a family ski destination St Wolfgang is paradise. See the video at http://www.videocommunity.com/pc/pc/display/9518 There are several ski areas close by but the area also offers a whole host of other activities making it ideal for both skiers and non-skiers. The Postalm is an alpine plateau reached by a charming 35-minute car or bus ride through gorges and hairpin bends. The bus stop for the free twice-daily post bus is less than a minute from the apartment. Postalm has a fantastic snow record and plenty of gentle slopes – ideal for learning or for gaining confidence and improving technique. Secondly there are the Hintersee slopes, which are within a 50-minute drive. These slopes are more challenging and are not used by the package holiday operators, which makes for less crowded slopes and good skiing for both intermediates and the more experienced. Then about an hour away is the Dachstein Ski area with over 140 KM of ski tracks. Other activities include ice-skating on the lake, tobogganing, snowboarding – in fact any winter activity you can think of!
In summer whether you are looking for a relaxing time cruising the crystal clear waters of the mountain lake, a fantastic base for walks or exploring the area, St Wolfgang has everything. You can swim in the lake or take part in numerous water sports including swimming, sailing, paragliding, and water skiing. Or you can choose from horse riding, cycling, parachuting, ballooning, golf, climbing, bowling – the list is almost endless. Just five minutes walk from the apartment takes you to the base of the Schafberg Mountain where you can take the famous cog railway to the top. This 45-minute journey takes you to a 360-degree vantage point with breathtaking views across lakes and mountains. Stop to eat at the restaurant there and you will feel like you are dining at the top of the world. Another day if you continue on further past Ried you can walk into the village of St Gilgen – the birthplace of Mozart’s mother -where you could enjoy lunch and then maybe take a cable car ride to the top of the Zwolferhorn Mountain. Then if you are feeling a little tired you could take the paddle steamer or ferry back across the lake to St Wolfgang.
