The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Known as the French Riviera this stretch of beautiful coastline with hill-top villages inland is one of the most sought after destinations for visitors to France.
The Var region includes Saint Tropez and the beaches of Ramatuelle, Port Grimaud, Sainte Maxime and the charming inland villages of Grimaud, La Garde Freinet and Gassin.
With a mild year-round climate and sunny summers the region offers a wide variety of activities, either relaxing on a sandy beach or cross-country horse riding in the woods and vineyards, walking on the coastal paths or simply Celebrity spotting in the cafes of St Tropez.
Grimaud, a former Saracen stronghold, nestles at the foot of the Massif des Maures, hilly and quiet chestnut woodlands and retains its medieval character dominated by the ruins of the Grimaldis castle, after whom the village is named. It lies just 10 mins inland from Port Grimaud the little Venice designed in 1968 where home-owners can park their boats by their front door. Nearby Cogolin, a busy town with markets on Wednesday and Saturday and a large Supermarket fulfils most basic shopping needs and has a selection of good Restaurants.
The area is surrounded by vineyards and wine can be purchased directly from the Domaines or there is a wide choice from the local Grimaud wine cooperative. Gassin offers art galleries and a magificent view of the Gulf of St Tropez and Sainte Maxime. Golf and Tennis are readily available and a selection of festivals from Flowers to Polo and Wine and Film to Yachting and Historical take place throughout the year. The Tourist offices in each town have all the details. Whatever you want from a holiday this part of France has it on offer !
