The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region
If you love nature then you'll love the Limousin. Known as ' Frances lake District ', it is a beautiful and unspoilt part of the world. The distinct caramel coloured Limousin cattle as well as market gardens and orchards full of cherries and apples. Rivers and lakes teem with fish. The Limousin has a rich history, as well as its connections with the French Wars of religion and the revolution, its also linked with Richard the Lionheart, whose final attempt to wrest back control of his land from French lords ended in his death here. Limoges has the finest china in the world. An area that was once known as the abbey St Martial destroyed during the Revolution, now place de la Republique - is today the heart of the city. Rue de le Boucherie is one of the most attractive streets with its half timbered houses. The Jardins de l'Evéché is next door to the archbishops palace, these terraced gardens give a lovelly view over the Vienne river. Famous tapestries are still been woven in the town of Aubusson. As we are in France we can't forget the food either. Limousin beef is known for being very tasty. Whether you like to go walking, cycling or horseback riding, take to the water on skis or boat, head up to the sky for a birds eye view or simply spend time fishing you'll find it here.
