Home description
Hi, we are the Blackford family from Cambridge in the UK. Welcome to our new log home in beautiful French Canada, less than an hour's drive from Montreal international airport ! AND welcome to the land of FOUR SEASON fun !! The house is located close to the village of Mille Isles on the Fiddler Lake Resort which has been developed alongside Lake Fiddler in a 250 acre pine & maple forest & which extends to 86 individual log homes, all of which are privately owned and a centrally located Recreation Centre.
The house was completed in October 2008 after a full 12 month construction period. There is a small photo album in the house highlighting the progress, from the initial inspection visit in March 2007, showing the virgin forest plot covered in snow & a very rough track road, through the various construction stages of tree clearance, foundations, log stacking & final fit out. We are delighted with the outcome & hope you will be too!
It is a large 4 bedroom home extending to over 2,700 square feet known as the " Deer Trail " model & is constructed out of 9 inch Spruce logs from British Columbia over a stone clad & rendered concrete base. The extensive living accommodation is arranged on 2 levels. In the photos section below we have included a number of photographs taken during different seasons.
Our home is known as 1 Chemin de L'aigle which literally means "Path of the Eagle" ! It is situated on the highest point of the Resort with views to the south. On a clear night the twinkling lights of St Jerome & Montreal can be seen far to the southern horizon. The orientation of the house ensures maximum sunlight from dawn to dusk and great views !
Facing south, decks to the west.

The Quebec Province region
The property is located less than an hour's drive from Montreal airport in an area known as the "Lower Laurentians". St Sauveur is the local focus which, in the winter, has the nickname " Valley of the Stars " due to the numerous ski slopes within its vicinity that feature floodlit night time skiing. The approach up Route 15 in the winter is captivating as the whole sky is lit up as you approach the St Sauveur exit. In the summer the mountain transforms itself into one of the most unique water slide parks in Canada.
The Laurentians is a renowned four season destination. This beautiful region offers a wide variety of activities & some of the finest resorts, restaurants & bars. The quaint villages nestled in the mountain valleys provide for great apres-ski ! Mont Tremblant is considered the premier snowboard & ski resort in eastern North America. The resort, along with St. Sauveur, St. Adele and St. Agathe all boast five star restaurants & great nightlife to go along with the phenomenal skiing. International travelers should also be familiar with the resorts found in L'Esterelle, Val David & Val Morin.
The major highway through the Laurentians is the 15, which cuts right through the heart of the region. Above St. Agathe, the highway turns into the 117, which continues into the north to Tremblant Resort & on past Mont Laurier. Most of the areas, towns, villages and resorts are located just off these highways.
The Laurentians are blessed with unspoilt natural areas. A favourite, Parc du Mont Tremblant, protects a large area of the beautiful Laurentian mountains & provides for a wealth of outdoor activities. Other opportunities exist in the area's Nature Reserves, ZECs, Regional Parks & Forests. The region also has dozens of Lakes & Rivers.
Mont Tremblant Park is a beautiful area open all year round & supports a wealth of activities, including front country & backcountry camping, white water canoeing, mountain biking, hiking & backpacking. In the winter the Park is well known for its cross country skiing, with several cabins or huts which allow for extended backcountry trips. There is also winter camping & snow shoeing in the Park.
The Laurentians region has phenomenal leaf viewing in the Fall. Each year many of the ski hills put on a Fall festival where you can catch a ride on the ski lifts to the top of the mountains.
You can try your hand at ice climbing in the winter or pick up some cross country skis & disappear into the woods for a while. Snowshoeing is another great way to enjoy nature in the Laurentians & is very easy to learn. Or for something completely different you could try an exhilarating dogsled ride.
Mont Tremblant Resort has great hiking in the summer or you can book a rafting trip on the nearby Rouge River. You can also take advantage of the bike paths and the nearby P'tit Train du Nord rail trail. Golfers are well served by the world class courses in the region & at the resorts. If you are looking for a more relaxed approach to your holiday, have a look at the beaches, health clubs and spas.
The Laurentians are serviced by a number of outdoor companies providing guidance, instruction and outfitting. The area has several clubs & associations specialinsing in the outdoors. In addition you will find several outdoor centres in the region. If you need to pick up some gear or rent a bike or canoe you can always drop into one the region's outdoor retailers.
St. Sauveur area
Fiddler Lake Resort is a self contained 4 season resort with easy access to a huge variety of things to do & see! Within a 10 minute drive are attractions such as Ski Morin Heights & the Aerobic Corridor, a hilly trail through the woods used for hiking in the summer/spring/fall & cross-country skiing in the winter. In the summer Ski Morin Heights operates a high wire descent from the top of the mountain which is accessed via a chair lift.
Mont Habitant ( privately owned ) and Mont St. Sauveur ( MSSI ) are a 20 minute drive away. Mont St Sauveur sits alongside the village of St. Sauveur & is where the original Laurentian winter experience was born nearly a century ago. Today it continues to thrive alongside its devoted clientele, skiers who return year after year for the premium snow conditions & the biggest night skiing territory in the world. Year-round, the charmingly authentic village of St. Sauveur contributes to the exceptional dining, shopping and nightlife that have made the region the success story it is.
As a retreat of Montreal’s wealthy, St. Sauveur is a collection of brightly coloured wooden buildings, boutiques, art galleries & restaurants. The St. Sauveur Valley is also well-known for its nightlife. In the evening & throughout the year the main streets & buildings are lit with christmas lights & the streets are flooded with people creating a festive atmosphere. There are several bars, nightclubs and bistros that offer a musical variety of live bands, folksingers & variety shows.
St. Sauveur is renowned as the capital of dining in the Laurentians because of the quantity, variety & quality of its restaurants. There are around 40 restaurants offering visitors an incredibly wide choice, from a quick snack at a fast-food restaurant to sophisticated establishments offering refined cuisine & fine wines. Take the time to enjoy life while strolling in the commercial streets, such as Rue Principale, which is located at the heart of the village & abounds with charming boutiques. You can buy also buy directly from the manufacturer at Quebec’s largest factory outlet centre including brands such as Reebok, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger & many others. There is also Les Versants St-Saveur where you will find some factory outlets, like Levi's, Pantorama, Ecco and Chaussurama. Or you can go to the shopping centres, Le Carrefour des Trois-Villages and Les Galeries des Mont, which have a variety of shops and boutiques for all tastes.
Temperatures in the area are a dry cold in the winter to a humid warm in the summer. Expect minus 10-20 degrees in December/January to plus 25-30 degrees in July/August.
Each season has its specific attractions that will make your stay enjoyable. There are 6 ski resorts in the Valley of St Sauveur - St Sauveur, Mont Avila, Morin Heights, Mont Olympia,Mont Gabriel ( all run by MSSI ) & Mont Habitant. There are more than 155 ski trails on 8 mountain faces. The valley is also well known for its cross country skiing, with more than 60 km of groomed cross-country ski trails & plenty of cabins or huts which allow for extended backcountry trips. There is also winter camping, snow shoeing, dog sledding and snow-mobiling in the area. Mont Avila also has 2 snow tubing parks which are well worth a visit.
Summer activities include front country and backcountry camping, swimming, white water rafting, mountain biking, golfing, rock climbing, fishing, horse riding, ATV trails & over 200 km of hiking trails. At Mont St. Sauveur there is a newly constructed waterslide park. There are 5 golf courses within a 10 minute drive & more than 20 in the surrounding area. Golf at the Balmoral ( Morin Heights ) or Piedmont golf clubs offers both breath taking views of the region while providing unique & challenging mountainside fairways.
You can also relax at one of the many different spas in the area such as www.spalerefuge.com ( Morin Heights ) www.spalebaltique.com ( Morin Heights ) www.spaofuro.com ( Morin Heights ) www.manoir-saint-sauveur.com - ( St Sauveur ) www.polarbearsclub.ca ( St Jerome ) All the Spas and Health Centres with their river baths, saunas & massages are first-class establishments.
In the Fall, you will be astonished by the phenomenon of the changing of the colours of the deciduous trees, where you can undertake cycling or hiking on trails such as “Le P’tit train du Nord”, a 230 kilometre linear trail & former railway, which, once winter catches up, becomes a cross-country skiing trail.
Mont Tremblant is a 45 minute drive to the north. There are 3 vast national parks - Mont Tremblant, Papineau-Labelle & Rouge Matawin with over 1,000 lakes & rivers & some of Canada's most diverse wildlife. Montreal is within easy reach, a City which combines North American energy with European flair with fine dining & theatres & a Grand Prix in June ! Ottawa, the nation's capital, is within a 2 hour drive.
How to get there
For those flying in from the UK, flying time is around 6.5 hours going out & sometimes under 6 hours coming back. Most flights leave the UK in the mid afternoon & arrive around 6 PM Canadian time ( 5 hours behind ) . Return flights are overnight, leaving around 8-9 PM & arriving back in the UK the next morning at around 7/8 AM. Clearing Canadian customs is fairly swift as there are always a good number of operatives & the usual car hire firms are found in the car park building which is accessed via a pedestrian crossing outside the Terminal & is well signposted ( turn left & then right ). Alternatively, if you do not want to drive yourself there is a car hire firm in St. Sauveur that will pick you up from the Airport & drop you off at the house with the car of your choice. It is therefore possible to be at the house for around 8PM.
From Montreal airport : -when leaving the airport, head toward: Aut-20 / Aut-520 / Montreal. -follow the signs for Aut 520E and merge onto Autoroute 520E. -stay on Aut-520E for about 2 to 3km then take exit 4 toward Aut-13 / Laval / Lachine -take Aut-13N toward Laval. -stay on 13N for approximately 16 to 19 km then merge onto Aut-640E -in approx 2 to 3 km, take the Aut-15N toward Mirabel / St-Jerome -stay on Aut-15N for approx 40 km, then take exit 60 (St-Sauveur / Rte-364) -at the first traffic light, turn left, over the bridge, then right onto Rte 364. -stay on Rte 364 O (O for West!) for aprox 8 - 10 km toward Morin-Heights -watch for Rte 329S (S for south) / Morin-Heights. -you will be turning left at a traffic light onto Rte 329 -stay on Rte 329 S -Fiddler Lake Resort will be on your left approx 8 to 10 km past Morin Heights. (A shorter route missing out St. Sauveur & Morin Heights would be to leave Aut15N at St Jerome & head west for Mille Isles & turn south where the road hits Rte 329 - probably not one for the winter though !)
From Ottawa: Highway 50 to 148 to Lachute. Highway 158 to 329 North. Fiddler Lake Resort is 20 km away, on your right.

The main upper level is accessed via a covered porch and upon entry the distinctive aroma of the logs envelopes the senses and the big open plan living area presents a full height stone fireplace, a vaulted ceiling with feature chandelier & a beautiful large cathedral window which provides elevated views of the forest as the house is situated at the highest point of the development. The upper level provides the open plan living area, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, 2 double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms & 2 large closets for boots/coats/skis etc. The lower level is accessed via an internal staircase which has a door at the top and this opens into a huge open plan family room & 2 further bedrooms, each with twin beds, a large family bathroom with bath & shower & a laundry room.
The upper level living room has a 32 inch Toshiba HD LCD TV and satellite receiver & the basement has an entertainment centre with 46 inch Sony HD LCD TV, satellite receiver, DVD player & surround sound ( which also feeds sound to the living area upstairs & to the outside 3 season porch ) , pool table & games table. In addition, there is wireless high speed internet, a large American style top loader washing machine & separate dryer, a clothes iron & board, hair driers in all bedrooms, bed linen & throws, towels, BBQ, patio furniture & toboggans. - in fact everything that is required for a comfortable & relaxing stay.
The house presents an ideal opportunity for 2 families to share a memorable holiday together - in any configuration to suit but, importantly, it is possible for the adults to get peace & quiet upstairs with the door to the top of the stairs closed & the kids using the family room below!

Further details outdoors: The house sits on a 1.5 acre plot of woodland with lawns to the front, rear & either side. The landscaping has been undertaken to provide a neat clean finish but keeping in mind that nature cannot be outdone, the woods surrounding the home have been left in a natural state & are literally on the doorstep, as is the wildlife ! Natural rocks, boulders & pebbles are scattered around the plot. Look out for the huge glacial boulder that sits next to house 94 opposite!
Natural log benches set on stone slabs are scattered around the grounds allowing for time out so that the natural forest beauty & wildlife can be observed & soaked up. One location is a particularly good "G&T "stop where you can relax in the late afternoon sun in the summer ! We have placed a hollowed out log deerfeeder at the edge of the forest to the rear garden and Whitetail Deer can be seen feeding from it in the early morning or at dusk. A bag of maize is usually found in the house in the closet next to the door. A parking area for 3/4 cars sits close to the house & the driveway extends to the porch steps for loading/unloading luggage/shopping etc.
The house has 2 wooden decks. The upper level deck has great 180 degrees elevated views & can be used for sunbathing. The lower level deck houses the hot tub and has steps down to the freestanding barrel sauna and the adjoining outdoor BarBQ cooking area. Adjoining the upper level deck is the screened 3 season porch which houses a further dining table & 6 chairs - great for summer evenings !
The Fiddler Lake Resort Recreation Centre is centrally located and is a large impressive building constructed out of 15 inch logs & set in landscaped grounds with a large car park. This houses the main reception & has both indoor & outdoor swimming pools, male & female changing rooms & at first floor level, a children's playroom with computer games, pool table, air hockey & a balcony to the indoor pool. There are also 2 floodlit outdoor tennis courts which become a skating rink in the winter. The staff are only too willing to assist in making your stay relaxing & stress free. They can offer suggestions for sightseeing, activities & restaurants & are happy to forward book such things for you. They also have access to discounted rates for various activities, such as the High Wire in Morin Heights, the Water Park in St Sauveur & ski/boot hire at Mont Habitant. They will also book taxis if you feel like sampling the restaurants & bars of Morin Heights or St. Sauveur without the worry of the drive back.
In the winter a 4WD car is essential to get around as the site undulates & there are some inclines as you wind around road network within the Resort. It is not uncommon to see snowfalls of 12 inches at a time - efficient snow clearing of the roads, drives, paths & decks is a priority of the Resort but a sure footed vehicle is always a sound decision. All the hire cars have winter tyres.
You will find that most people in the area are bilingual - French & English - so generally there are few language difficulties. In fact Morin Heights is particularly proud of its Scottish ancestry. Most restaurants tend to have have bilingual menus & we are yet to meet a waitress or waiter that does not speak excellent English.
It is always a good idea to drop off at a Supermarket on the way to the house. The best two with the biggest choice are either Loblaws in St Sauveur or IGA in Morin Heights. There is also a smaller local store in the centre of Morin Heights called Vaillancourt - here you can find an amazing selection of bottled beers from around the world. Alternatively, you can book ahead with the Resort staff & have essential provisions delivered to the house before you arrive.
With regard to airlines, the best two are Air Canada & BA. Both fly from Heathrow. A cheaper alternative would be Air Transat, a Canadian low cost airline based out of Montreal. These flights can be booked through Canadian Affair - www.canadianaffair.com & they fly from Gatwick. Whereas Air Canada & BA invariably stick to their schedules, Air Transat seems to be a little more "hit & miss", based on our own experiences, but you cannot knock the upgrade to premium economy as value for money!
The area & Resort is very much a four season destination as there are so many different things to do as the seasons change. There is only so much that one can put down in print - the real key is to visit & experience why we love the area, the people, the experience & the activities so much !
