The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone region
Old Provence with villages and towns nestling either side of the Alpilles mountains. Warm summers long warm Autumns. Cold crisp short winters. Colourful Springtime, the scene of many of Van Goghs works. Points of interest include Arles with its Roman Amphitheatre, Avignon with its Palace of the Popes. Pont de Gard with its original Roman aquaduct. Les Baux a hilltop village with stunning views of the Camargue and a Fort with working siege machines.
St Remy-de-Provence area
St Remy, birthplace of Nostradamus and home to Vincent Van Gogh while he was in the sanatorium here. This was the psychiatric hospital where VanGogh committed himself after he cut his own ear off. Here, he did more than 100 pieces of art, many of which were his most important and most famous paintings. This is a "must-see" for the area. It’s a self-guided walking tour with placards in English.
You can see the actual walls and gardens in the spots that inspired Van Gogh. There are placards that show a copy of his painting, in the spot where he stood to paint it. This allows you to compare the painting to how the exact spot looks today. For many spots, the similarities are amazing.
Glanum the Roman settlement is 5 mins away. There are many restaurants, bars and shopping facilities to try. Market day is every wed and is famous for its colourful stalls offering locally grown food, wine, olives and myriad fresh produce, as well as clothing , soft fabrics, soap, perfumes, spices and so much more. The transhumance (sheep drove) comes through the town every year in late spring and bull running is a regular event all through the summer!
There are many cafes and restaurants to try within a short distance your own doorstep. This area is typically provencal dominated by the pretty Alpilles hills (little Alps) behind the town.
