The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone region

St Remy, set in sunny Provence with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year is renowned for its food, wine and culture. Its fascinating past dates back to the Roman period and every generation since has added a layer of history to this lovely old town. Van Gogh and many other artists have made St Remy and the surrounding countryside the subject of their art.

St Remy-de-Provence area

The town itself is a famous destination in its own right with lovely cafes and restaurants in and around the town, a great many of them in easy walking distance of the apartment. This really is a spoil yourself holiday; if not enjoying the food and hospitality, then shopping or just strolling round the meandering streets is pure pleasure. St Remy is also the perfect centre for touring provence and with its vinyards, olive groves and dramatic landscape.

Nearby sites are the gallo-roman remains at Glanum. St Paul de Mausole is where Van Gogh was treated, the cloisters, church and sanitorium are open to visitors. The nearby pretty village of Maussane offers a golf course. Les Baux is an authentically preserved medieval village with a castle perched on the hilltop, and is probably the second most visited location after St. Remy.

Eygalieres is a neighbouring village, officially recognised as one of the most beautiful in France. It is also home to many famous celebrities. Avignon is a vibrant town, with the Pope's palace, shops, restaurants and 'Halle' (food hall) to name but a few attractions. The art and theatre festival in July is wonderful. Arles has one of the best preserved Roman arenas in France, which is still used, but only for concerts and bull fights (spanish and provencal) nowadays.

The Luberon is a short distance away by car, with lovely hilltop villages such as Gordes, Menerbes and Lacoste. Rousillion is probably top of most peoples 'must see' agendas with its stunning cliffs of yellow, red and orange ochre (look out for the bee-eaters nesting in the outcrops). Isle-sur-le-Sorgue is known as the 'Venice of Provence' with its slow rivers threading through the town and its colourful Sunday market of antiques and provencal produce.

Events are almost too numerous to mention, every little village has its own saints day festival, often with a 'charette' (cart) being raced through the streets pulled by up to forty heavy horses. There is often live music playing, travelling circuses, fairgrounds and bull runs.

There is also the 'Transhumance' in Spring and Autumn when the sheep are taken in huge flocks through the towns as a farewell (or safe return) to the locals before they leave for the Alps. Finally other things to do are to enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of warm and welcoming provence.
