Le Pigeonnier
About the home
Le Pigeonnier is a lovely spacious stone built house located amongst the rolling hills along the Dordogne/LOT borders with breathtaking views towards the Massif Central.
Set in a quiet hamlet between Cahors and Souillac, this converted stone barn has 4 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large open plan kitchen/diner with through lounge and a good-sized garden with swimming pool.
The stunning open plan living/dining/kitchen extends throughout most of the ground floor and forms the focal point of the house with wood parquet floors, lots of big wooden beams, a gorgeous arched window to the front and patio doors to the rear. At one end is a large well-equipped kitchen with plenty of workspace and comfortable dining for 8 people or more. At the other is the sitting room with large plush sofas and a big hearth for log fires for cozy evenings or cooler months.
To the rear of the house is an enclosed garden - mainly grassed - with a 10m x 5m swimming pool and a little herb garden. There is a small comfortable patio and barbecue area with table and shade, perfect for alfresco dining.
The surrounding countryside provides plenty of scope for the more active with cycling, walking, kayaking, underground caves and even rock climbing nearby. There are also several lovely market towns and picturesque villages to visit.
The impressive cathedral town of Sarlat is within easy driving distance as are other key attractions including Rocamadour, Beynac and the beautiful hill top villages of St Cirq-Lapopie and Cordes-sur-Ciel on the Lot River. For engineering and architecture enthusiasts the famous Norman Foster designed Millau Bridge is 2 hours drive away.

Enquire nowThe Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region
The Lot region of the Midi-Pyrenees is one of the undiscovered gems of France. The River Lot (to the south) meanders in great lazy loops through the surrounding countryside and has carved out a wide gorge.
Cahors is the largest town and boasts one of the best examples of a fortified medieval bridge in France, The Pont Valentre.
The region also produces some excellent and distinctive red wines, and are far better value than elsewhere.
The cliffs along this stretch of river rise to considerable heights and give rise to old fortresses and feudal villages. Prettiest among these are the hill-top villages of St-Cirq Lapopie, Cordes-sur-Ciel and Puy-l'Eveque.
There are festivals and events throughout the region from June through September in many villages and towns.
The region's main markets take place at Cahors (wed & sat), Figeac (sat), Fumel (sun), Gourdon (tue & sat), Gramat (tue & fri), Puy L'Eveque (tue & sat), Vileneuve-sur-Lot (tue, wed & sat), Monpazier (thu), Sarlat (sat), Souillac (fri). Please check with local offices for confirmation and/or others.
The St Projet / L'Hebrard Haut area
Le Pigeonnier, as the name implies was once a pigeon house that formed part of a barn. This particular “Pigeonnier” was converted into a family home about 10 years ago and is in a small hamlet of 6 houses called L’Hebrard Haut (which literally means high place). It forms part of the commune of St.Project and is close to Le Vigan (local village with amenities/services).
Gourdon, the nearest town, is right on the border with the Dordogne region and another 5 mins drive further on. It has many restaurants and shops, banks etc. There is a two-tower church in the old town at the top of the hill with great views and there are some pre-historic caves nearby too. There is also a large Intermarche about 2kms outside Gourdon (direction Fumel)
Souillac is a pretty market town on the banks of the Dordogne about 15 mins drive from the house. It has several good restaurants, bars and small shops and kayaking is available along the banks of the Dordogne.
Sarlat is 40mins drive away and is very picturesque. The cathedral was recently restored at great expense and is well worth a visit although market days (Saturday) can get quite busy in high season. Lots of great restaurants, galleries, boutiques and buildings of architectural interest.
Martel is another pretty market town

Reviews

This year was the second time we have stayed with our teanage children in Le Pigeonnier and we hope it wont be our last. Friends of ours will stay there shortly on our recommendation. Its offers the best of both worlds, complete tranquil surroundings for those lazy days by the pool with plenty to see and do locally. Well located for piece and quiet but yet close to all shopping amenities. From the owner of this property to all in France who help to make sure you have everything you need when you stay there, they couldnt be more helpful or friendly. It really is a slice of paradise and our only regret is that we had to come home. |
