The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne is part of the Aquitaine region in the south west of France and is famed for its wonderful wooded valleys, glorious rivers and more than a thousand fairy tale castles. The area is steeped in history with many delightful medieval towns and villages. The bastide villages and the history of The Hundred Years War are of particular interest.Visitors come from all over the world to see the cave paintings in the prehistory cave settlements at Les Eyzies and Lascaux, and to visit the many other beautiful underground caverns and caves in the region.

Bergerac area is renowned for its wines as is Cahors In the neighbouring Lot department. Both offer wine tastings and vineyard tours.Nearer to home the Domme vineyard is building a sound reputation for the qaulity of its wines

For foodies there is an endless choise of wonderful restaurants offering such regional fare as truffles, foie gras, walnuts, duck, cassoulet, cepes and much more. The whole area is rich in arts and crafts with many interesting galleries and studios. For retail therapy the cities of Bergerac,Brive,Cahors and Perigueux are all easily reached.

St. Pompon-Perigord Noir

The picturesque medieval village of Daglan is 5 mins.drive away and here you will find the Petit Paris one of the finest gourmet restaurants in the area. The romantic cliff villages of Beynac and La Roque Gageac are within easy reach as is the bastide village of Domme with its wonderful views over the Dordogne.

The historic town of Sarlat with countless restaurants, pavement cafes and colourful street markets is just a ride away and the Sunday street market at St Cyprien takes some beating for sheer vitality. Garden lovers are spoilt for choice, with the fantastic topiary gardens at de Manoir d'Eyrignac,at one end of the scale,to the delightful natural Jardins de Albrede at the other. The garden at Marqueyssac with its breathtaking views of the river and the neighbouring chateaux is candlelit on Thursday evenings - Magical. And then,of course, there is the marvelous river - whether its paddling in the shallows, swimming to the islands, picnics on the banks, boat trips from Beynac or simply drifting down river in a canoe...What else is there? glorious

"Lovely, comfortable gite in superb location"

We stayed at Maison Mireille in March/April and couldn't have been happier with our wonderful accommodation. As soon as we walked into the gite we knew we were going to love it. It's light, bright, cosy and comfortable with a lot of thought having been given to the decor and making things nice. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and both bedrooms are great, really comfortable, with lovely en suite bathrooms. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in when away from home. The kitchen is well equipped with everything we could have wanted. The living accommodation is also very comfortable and nicely laid out, very conducive to evenings spent chatting over a glass of wine! David who owns the gite couldn't have been more helpful whilst unobtrusive. He provided helpful information about local markets, restaurants etc. and was happy to make bookings for us. A really nice guy. St. Pompont has an excellent restaurant 'L'envie des Mets'. We went on our last evening and wished we'd gone earlier as it was so good. Daglan (5 mins down the road) also has an excellent restaurant 'Le Petit Paris'. Check out the Decor! Also at Daglan is a very good mini market and also a chef who does take out. We didn't spend much time in the garden as the weather wasn't great but it is well equipped with loungers, table and chairs, parasol and barbecue. We'll get to use them though as we liked it so much we're going back in July! I would highly recommend Maison Mireille anytime of year, not just the usual holiday season. Although the weather wasn't good when we went we were lovely and warm and cosy, if you're looking for comfortable, clean and pleasant accommodation in the Dordogne any time of year, this is for you. Bonnes Vacances!!!!

"A great find"

Lots of places look good on the web sites, but this place has no unpleasant surprises. Great rural setting, but can walk to town; wonderfully updated with all conveniences; plenty of room, great bathrooms. The owners are nearby and very helpful. Perfect place to get-away, or to see all the attractions of the Dordogne. Very good restaurants within short driving distances if one doesn't want to use the fully furnished, modern kitchen.
A real find.
