Goose Cottage
About the home
The cottage has been carefully restored to provide space, yet cosiness for a relaxing holiday.
5 minutes away is the market town of Sille le Guillaume with it's sandy beach, fishing lakes and huge forests. 40 minutes away, the lively city of Le Mans offers a stunning market, theatre, restaurants, modern shops as well as the cathedral, fascinating, cobbled, old town and, not forgetting, of course, the famous race track.
Right on the doorstep are miles of beautiful walks through traffic free country lanes.
The front garden of the cottage has a table and chairs for you to sit, with a glass of wine (or two ) and enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of this lovely village and maybe, to pass the time of day with it's friendly inhabitants. The local pub is English run and serves English beer as well as French.
If you are house hunting, this is an ideal base for searching the Mayenne/Sarthe area, undoubtably the prettiest area in France.

The Loire Valley / Mayenne region
Known as the garden of France, the Loire Valley is rich in agriculture and viniculture.
On your travels, do stop if you see a sign proclaiming 'Produits fermier' or 'degustation libre'. The farmers and winegrowers are only too pleased to offer you tastings of their produce and you won't be diappointed!
Abundant also, in history, nearly every chateau has a Royal tale to tell. The stories of Joan of Arc come to life when you visit beautiful Orleans, and many other chateaux in the region that once belonged to her followers and are proud to display their part in France's history.
Soulmes Abbaye , near Sable sur Sarthe, is open every day and Gregorian chant is sung by the monks several times during the day. An experience not to be missed!
Children and adults alike will thoroughly enjoy the Zoo at La Fleche. Opened just 2 years ago it is called one of the wonders of Europe. The best of it's kind I have ever been to with so much space and thought having gone into the care of the animals.
The St Pierre sur Orthe area
St Pierre sur Orthe is a pretty village with a beautiful church and other interesting, historical buildings. The auditoire is a stopping point for pilgrims en route from Santiago de Campostella in Spain, to Mont St Michel in Brittany. Guided tours can be arranged.
The local pub 'L'Homme Vert' has live folk music Tuesday evenings and concerts are performed regularly throughout the summer. Great food in the evenings by reservation. Fish 'n'chips a speciality on Friday nights. along with some very good English ale! See website: www.upstandinghommevert.com
Named after the beautiful river which cuts through it, Mayenne is a large market town with a chateau, old winding streets, a magnificent cathedral (basilica) and interesting shops. Just 25 mins from the cottage it is well worth a visit, especially at lunchtime in the 'Hotel des Voyageurs' where they do a great 'Plat du Jour'
Evron, a little further south of Mayenne, has a wonderful market and an awe inspiring basilica. It is a pretty town and a good place to shop.
Lassay les Chateaux, north of Mayenne, is a joy to visit with it's medieval herb garden, rose gardens, chateau, restaurants, shops and pretty streets.
For real picture postcard villages, a visit to Fresnay sur Sarthe and St Ceneri le Gerei is a must.
Our village of St Pierre sur sur Orthe and many other villages in the area have various festivals throughout the year, be it celibrating a saint or a fruit or an animal.
Many other local villages/towns offer music sessions in bars/cafes, so whether your taste is folk, jazz, blues or classical there is something for everyone.
Horse riding is popular in the area and often riders meet up with ramblers for a 'randonnee' where large groups travel, offroad, between 2 or 3 villages, meeting up at the end of the day for a meal and a 'soiree' in the village hall. A lively event often not ending until the early hours!
The medieval town of St Suzanne has a beautiful castle perched high on the top of a hill, you can see for miles. Jousting events are held regularly and the bar/cafes are plentiful.
