The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Saint-Pierre-de-Frugie is about 440 miles from Calais and is a good six to seven hours drive. On a positive note the french roads are much better than ours in England and very rarely have any holdups.

As a point of interest we have found that the journey from Zeebrugge to Saint-Pierre-de-Frugie is pretty much the same (440 miles). There is an overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge which lands around 9.30am and gives everyone the chance of a good nights sleep before the 7 hour drive. I would suggest, if you live in the North of the UK, you consider this ferry as an option when planning your holiday.

If you think flying would be better for your party then many of the lo-cost airlines fly into Limoges airport. This is only 22 miles away from the village and car hire is available from the airport. Other nearby airports are Angouleme (40 miles) and Bergerac (56 miles).

Because of the secluded position of Les Landes a car really is essential.

St Pierre de Frugie

Saint Pierre de Frugie is a beautiful village with a church and a Marie. There is a recreational area with a lake and and a children's play area nearby.

La Coquille is a small market town and is about 5 minutes away by car. There is a good selection of shops and restaurants within La Coquille including a small supermarket ( Carrefour ). There is a small market every Thursday.

Heading away from Saint Pierre De Frugie is Busierre Galant, this is about 10minutes drive away. Here there is an enormous man made lake which has a beach and a cordoned off section for safe swimming and paddling for children. This resort also includes a volley ball court, table tennis, football pitch crazy golf and many more activities. It is very beautiful and well worth a visit. On the far side of the lake is a tree climbing and rope bridge activity centre which proves very popular with children, teenagers and adults!

Brantome is a larger town about 45 minutes away from Saint Pierre de Frugie and is known as the "Venice of the Dordogne". It is surrounded by a river and is very pretty. It is possible to hire canoes and canoe round the town or the more adventurous can be taken by minibus further upstream and left to paddle back to base. Many visitors have experienced this adventure and all have had a great time.

Brantome also boasts a fantastic Benedictine abbey which is well worth a visit. The town has some lovely bistros and restaurants situated along the side of the river.

The above is just a small sample of things to do in the region and the list really is endless. The greatest thing about a holiday in a place like Les Landes is the opportunity for adventure and discovery. "Lovely, relaxing break."

Fantastic holiday home, every thing you need is there. Pool and gardens were gorgeous and safe and great for the kids. All enjoyed table tennis tournaments too. Lovely to have pool and bathroom towels and bed linen provided as well as essential kitchen supplies. All very easy for mum! We didn't need to go anywhere else but had some interesting days out to nearby attractions and enjoyed exploring the beautiful surrounding area. A really relaxing enjoyable holiday that ticked the boxes for all the family. Of course the beautiful weather was an added bonus.

Thank you for your kind comments. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope you will consider Les Landes again in the future.

"The best holiday home I have ever been to - I can't wait to go back!"

I travelled to Les Landes as part of a large group (there were 10 of us with a few people dropping in or out in the second week). Ages ranged from 8 to 60+, and everyone had a fantastic time. The property is large and well maintained (grass was cut when we arrived, the house was clean etc.)

The grounds are phenomenal, and the pictures really don't do it justice. On the right when you enter in the gate there is a huge expanse of grass for running and playing (we used it as a rugby pitch, a badminton court and even for rounders matches). On your left is the pool, which is next to a large wooden shelter - which is where we spent most nights eating and having fun. The pool was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and there were more than enough loungers to go around.

The house was very traditional looking, with a large farmhouse kitchen and a good sized living room. When all 10 of us were in the living room together it was a bit of a squeeze, but we spent most of our time outside, and the house as a whole feels very spacious. The downstairs bedroom is ideal for the less mobile in the party, whilst the outside bedroom which isn't suitable for young children, (as noted on the owners website) is perfect for teenagers/older children who want some personal space.

The kitchen was fantastic with all the necessary bits and pieces we needed, and it isn't a long drive to the nearest supermarket. The service provided by the owner was excellent, very helpful and friendly, answering any questions I had very quickly. My least favourite thing about the property (other than leaving!) was the fence around the pool seemed a bit tatty (I told the owner this and he said he was aware and was replacing it before the next letting season!), all in all though the property was perfect and I can't wait to go back in 2013.

Thanks for your comments, I look forward to your next visit!

"Beautiful part of France. Unfortunately the property is not without problems."

Les Landes is in a beautiful and tranquil part of France, which some guests may find a little isolated. (I loved the rural location.) Unfortunately the house has a rodent problem that needs urgently a… More

Many thanks for the review. Les Landes does not have a serious rodent problem. Your experience was unfortunate and had you informed Glynn & Jenny, the management team (whose number is available at the house) they would have dealt with any issues during your stay. The house is always thoroughly cleaned between guests, Jenny did acknowledge that they were still cleaning when your party began to arrive (early) but assures me that the house was fully prepared by the agreed time. The village enjoys a wealth of facilities, children's play area, organic shop and the newly refurbished bar and restaurant is due to reopen in 2013. I am pleased you liked the location; Les Landes really is a very tranquil and idyllic spot for a family holiday.
