Both kitchen/dining room and lounge are large and easily accommodate 4 people (and can accommodate up to 6). The shower room upstairs also has a toilet and washbasin. There are also a single toilet on the ground floor and a second shower unit in the basement.

Further details outdoors

Access to the terrace is through the basement and is private to the house. There is also a small tiled area outside the front door that can also be used for eating and enjoying the sun.

The cottage does not have a garden and, as a consequence, it is not really suitable for active children or animals - but both are welcome, if our guests are happy they can cope with the facilities.

In the colder weather, downstairs has a cosy log fire and all rooms have electric radiators.

The house faces a Norman castle and looks out on the Layon valley. It is on the edge of a small, quiet village.

About this location

The Pays de la Loire region

The gîte is 20km South of Saumur and the Loire river. It is under 1 hour drive from Angers and only a little more to Tours. The summer temperature averages 26 deg C in the Summer (although it is often into the 30s in late July and August) and about 5 deg C at the coldest time of the year - although it does sometimes get frost and even snow.

It is slihtly rolling countryside, being part of the Layon valley, and is easy walking or cycling countryside. Many of the villages in the area of regular fairs as well as occasional summer events.

The area is full of history - including English history. There are Norman influences in some older castles and it was part of the region inherited by the Plantagnets resulting from Henry II's marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. As more central parts of the Loire, it benefited from the building frenzy of the renaissance.

It was even a key part of the 2nd world war, with one bridge being a key part of the final French attempt to resist the Nazi invasion and the Loire formed the boundary between occupied France and Vichy France.

Saint-Philbert-du-Peuple

Passavant-sur-Layon is a sleepy, quiet village with no shops. A nearby village (only 1,5 miles) has a small supermarket, restaurant and boulangerie.

Saumur has a full programme of holiday activities, including the Cadre Noire - a crack corps of the French cavalry that put on a number of displays - and occasional tank displays as well; there is also a massive museum of armoured warfare (the Musée des Blindés).

The château is enchanting and there are many beautiful sites in the town. Events include a Tablé in September, where 5000 sit down to a meal to celebrate the new harvest of the Champigny wine.
