The Côte d'Azur is one of the most inviting names in the world! The Mediterranean is Europe's bluest sea. The shade - Colbalt blue to artist - comes from the clarity of the water. The "tourist season" on the French Riviera lasts virtually all year round.
The winter season are characterised by a mild, sunny climate and are ideal for those who seek to avoid the peak influx of tourists. Spring and autumn can sometimes bring heavy rainfalls and the infamous mistral wind, but neither overshadows the magnificent display of flora in full bloom at these times. Summer is of course the best season for bathing and working up a suntan, not to mention taking part in the energetic night-life.
St Paul de Vence / Saint Paul area
From afar, the first view of Saint-Paul-de-Vence looks like a bucolic film set, the epitome of the fortified towns that once guaranteed the Var frontier.
Perched on a rocky spur behind ramparts that have remained more or less intact, it has kept much of its medieval appearance, while becoming one of the most visited villages in France, also known for its contemporary art scene.
Rue Grande is the main street (closed to traffic) running the full length of the village. Many of the arcaded 16C and 17C house bearing coats of arms are now artist's studios, antique shops, and art galleries.
The Urn-shaped fountain with its vaulted washing place in the square is of particular interest. The Gothic church building was constructed from the 12C to the 13 C, with the vaulting rebuilt in the 17C and the bell-tower in the 18C. At the end of the north aisle hangs a painting attributed to Tintoretto of Ste Catherine of Alexandria.
The other chapel is adorned with a Madonna ofthe Rosary (1588) with Catherine de Medici in the crowd. From the bastion of the south gate, overlooking the cemetery, there is a superb view of the Alps and the coastline. The ramparts remain such as they were built (1537-47) by François I. Follow them around counter-clockwise using the parapet walk where possible.
Just 15 minutes by walk from the villa, you can visit the Fondation Maeght, designed by José Luis Sert, which exhibit artworks from Braque, Chagall, Léger, Kandinsky, Miro, Tapiès ...
Later, why not have a drink at the Café de la Place, set up on the main square where villagers like to congregate and play pétanque, is at the heart of life in Saint-Paul. It belongs to the legendary Colombe d'Or, where you can enjoy a fabulous dinner or déjeuner !
