Home description
Vence is famous for being home to artists, sculptors and painters. D. H. Lawrence died in Vence, March 1930.
The town has a small chapel, up above the historique Chapelle du Saint-Marie du Rosaire (1948, completed in 1951), decorated with stained glass and other fittings by Henri Matisse.
Within the historique village, there is a chapel that has a mosaic by Chagall on an outside wall, dated 1911.
There is a section of the old Roman road still in the village, and it can be walked on.
The town has a thriving community of artists and is a better choice than the neighboring Saint Paul if a traveller wants a unique work of art, as well as a better place to windowshop than the crowded, steep walks of St Paul.
Vence is famous for its spring water, which can be collected from numerous fountains throughout the town.
All the shops one needs, supermarkets, post offices, boutiques, and many more.
Everyday there is a small farmers market in the Grand Jardin, plus a more general market with clothes, toiletries etc. in the Old Town on a Tuesday and a Friday morning.
An extremely helpful Tourist Office right in the centre of town will guide you where you wish to go, and what activities are on offer during your stay.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
Alpes-Maritimes includes the famous French Riviera coastline on the Mediterranean Sea with the important towns and cities of Cannes, Nice, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and Antibes.
The area is mountaneous right down to the coast. This Southern area of the Alps is termed the Maritime Alps.
Tourism in the department centres on the Riviera, known as the Côte d'Azur, known for its beaches and luxury hotels.
The area inland from the busy Cote d'Azur is an excellent base for many out door sports: cycling, mountain biking, skiing, walking, rock climbing, canyoning, canoeing, rafting, fishing, horse riding, forests of adventure, caving and the area has the first ever under ground via ferrata.
St Paul de Vence / Vence area
There is much to visit in this area. Vence (about 3km), is a lively and interesting town with chic shops, lots of cafés on the old town square, art galleries and good restaurants. Matisse’s Chapelle de Rosaire is also in Vence (1.5km).
Saint-Paul-de-Vence (about 6km), is a pretty hill top village with a world famous restaurant, La Colombe d’Or. Saint Paul has many contemporary art galleries, the largest and most famous being the Fondation Maeght, which has a superb collection both indoors and outdoors.
Nice is about 20km, and it's old town is lively and picturesque. There are also excellent restaurants on the beach all along the Promenade des Anglais. The city’s museums would be of great interest to art lovers: Musées Matisse and Chagall.
The property is well placed for exploring the many inland perched villages, such as Tourettes-sur-Loup and Gourdon.
The coastal towns of Antibes, Cannes, Villefranche and St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat are a short drive away, plus Monaco and Italy are reachable in just under the hour, getting onto the A8 motorway at Cagnes sur Mer.
Vence is close to many hiking paths, and yet only 1h30/2h00 from the main ski stations of Auron and Isola 2000.
The smaller ski station of Greollières is 40 km away
