About this location

The Kent region

Kent is described as the Garden of England, with its beautiful rolling countryside, and fertile fruit orchards. It often misses the extremes of weather seen in the rest of the country. It is full of historic interest, being about 25 minutes from Hastings, the town of the famous battle of 1066, 45 minutes from Canterbury, the ancient centre of so many significant ecclesiastical happenings . Some of the surrounding villages can be traced back many centuries and display their 'chocolate box' appearance with thatched cottages, windmills, ponds, winding country lanes and ancient architecture. The fascinating town of Rye with its cobbled streets is only 20 minutes away.

There are numerous National Trust properties in the area, (including Sissinghurst Castle), and other fascinating castles and gardens (such as Bodium, Scotney and Leeds Castles, Pashley Manor Gardens etc. There are wineries, vineyards, sports centres, steam railways, golf courses, and museums as well as unusual eating places and friendly pubs serving excellent food.

St. Michaels

Shalom House is only a 5 minutes drive away (or a 20 minute amble along the tree lined, wooded, disused railway track), from the historic town of Tenterden, with its broad high street, fascinating little shops, plentiful eating houses and well equipped sports centre with swimming pool. Shalom House is a 5 minutes walk away from beautiful open countryside with plenty of footpaths to explore the stunning scenery

A car is not essential as St Michaels is on a bus route which goes into Tenterden, Headcorn, Ashford, Canterbury and Maidstone. However, full advantage of the huge variety of places of interest could not be taken without independent transport.

"Lovely, welcoming, spacious, well equiped, clean & tidy place to stay."

We stayed at Shalom House for a long week end with family. There were 6 adults and a baby and there was plenty of room without getting on top of each other. 2 en-suites and 1 family bathroom meant there were never any queue's in the mornings either!!! The house is lovely and spacious with everything you could ever need to make your stay as comfy as possible. It was just like staying at home. The garden is beautiful - it was just a shame the weather wasn't that good so we couldn't enjoy it more but it was lovely breakfasting in the conservatory overlooking it all. Hazel, the owner, is also very friendly and helpful and her freshly baked bread and cake were a very welcome "welcome". I would definitely recommend.

"Lovely family home with lots of space"

We stayed at Shalom House over Christmas and it was the ideal home from home for us. The house is very well equipped (everything we needed to cook Christmas lunch for 14!) with a big kitchen, relaxing living room and comfortable bedrooms. The conservatory at the back of the house overlooks the pretty garden and gave us the perfect extra dining area! Hazel (the owner) was very friendly and helpful & had even put up Christmas decorations for us! Overall the house was better than we expected and we would highly recommend it.
