The Basse-Normandie region

The Château is situated at the base of the Cotentin Peninsular, surrounded by varied areas of natural beauty and interest with over 200km of coastline to explore, you can find verything from rolling sand dunes to rugged cliffs. Why not sample the seafood and other indigenous culinary delights of the elegant costal ports of Barneville-Carteret, St Vaast, Barfleur or the busy port of Cherbourg?

Famously, an hour and a half to the west is Mont St Michel with its gothic monastry and the Christain Dior museum at Granville en route. An hour to the east the historic city of Bayeux with its world famous Bayeux tapestry and cathedral and the nearby Omaha beach and war memorial.

Paris is easily accessible as a day trip destination by train from Carentan to St Lazare in 2.5hours through beautiful Normandy countryside.

The region is of course well known for the many D-Day landing sites and museums and sites from the Second World War.

Local sporting attractions include fishing in the sea or the myriad of lakes and rivers nearby and golf, horse riding, canoeing, wind and kite surfing, land yachting, walking and birdwatching.

The rolling farmland countryside scattered with Manoirs and Châteaux is mainly put to horse breeding and dairy farming from which the renowned Creme Fraiche D'Isigny and various soft cheeses are produced. You may also be lucky enough to come across some of the vast apple orchards that source delicious Normany Cider and Calvados.

Sainte-Mere-Eglise

We will be happy to advise you on finding special places to explore, hidden treasures that we have enjoyed as a family having lived in the region for 11 years. There are many good restaurants to choose from within a 10km radius ranging from some excellent seafood restaurants where you can sample locally caught produce, notably oysters and mussels, to quiet country auberges or bustling creperies, not to mention the unique fine dining experience that is "Chez Roger."

The local town Carentan has all amenities readily to hand, and a lovely market on monday mornings. The nearest supermarket, garage and recycling facilities are only a 5 minute drive away.

For special gifts, or a touch of boutique shopping, Bayeaux and Cherbourg have plenty to offer while the chic resorts St Vaast La Hougue on the east coast and Cartetet on the west coast are lively places to shop, eat and drink, attracting a more cosmopolotain clientele during the summer months as Paris empties.

Carentan has a fantastic new swimming pool complex with sauna and steam room, a cimena and sailing school. Land yachting is available on utah beach, and other locally available sporting activities include cycling, horse riding, sea and river fishing, golf and clay pigeon shooting.

The summer months in particular are packed with local fetes and " vide greniers" (empty attics) a great way to pick up bargains and get to savour the atmosphere of local life.

The region is also rich in history and culture, from the Bayeaux tapestry and Mont St Michel, the glamourous villa of Christian Dior at Granvile, to fascinating museums of rural life such as"La Ferme Musee at Ste Mere Eglise", and "A la recherche du temps perdu " in Bricquebec.

For those interested in the military history of WWII, Chateau Bellenau is ideally situated to visit every landing beach, museum and cemetry, and also had a role to play itself, being the first building liberated by the 101st airborne american paratroopers, "the screaming eagles"
