Barn loft Apartment
About the home
A self catering apartment in a former barn attached to our 400 year old Normandy farmhouse we have renovated it to incorporate modern comfortable living along with the ambience of an old stone building. Set within the grounds of large country house of over 3 acres, both our units have separate entrances, secure parking and completely self contained... if you don't want to see us you don't!
This is a child free zone... we particularly attract couples looking to switch off and explore the area at a gentle pace, here there are no traffic jams, stress and certainly none of the hustle and bustle of city living! We couldn't be more opposite to modern day living with busy stressful careers, (we had those in London before moving to France 10 years ago!)...but, with the comforts that discernible couples are looking for.
Within 10 minutes of Utah Beach and set within the Park Naturel Cotentin & Bessin. We are ideal for long country or beach walks, there are rivers and canals, bird watching, the river Douve only 3km from us has a boat trip through the Marshes to see Cranes, Marsh Harriers, Egrets just to name a few species.
We are set in the heart of the Normandy D Day Invasion beaches with WW2 Utah Beach 10 minutes away, Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan both 8 kms from us & as we are 2 minutes from N13 we are in an ideal location for easy access to go sight seeing, war tours etc.
Bayeux, Mont St Michel are just short drives away, it is even possible to go to Jersey for the day from here!
Bayeaux half an hour away, Caen, now that's a city worth exploring where William the Conqueror ruled from and is buried.... St Vaast a UNESCO site 20 minutes away, Honfleur 2 hours...the problem here is there is too much to do!
This apartment, a large open plan living/ dining area with a newly installed Godin wood burner - the new CO2 efficient design... curl up on the sofa watch TV or read a book in front of a roaring log fire... bliss! TV, DVD. Sky Free to view, stereo & radio.
There is free WIFI however because we are a 400 year old stone house with walls over a meter thick the signal isn't always high speed, we have 2 boosters but if there is an outside slow down then signal can be lost in the apartment - however if anything urgent is needed to be dealt with you are welcome to come into the office where the Livebox is situated.
We are totally ecological - all our products are biological, no chemicals, recycled containers and not tested on animals - recycling is part of our terms.
The double bedroom has a spacious en suite with a wet room area along with a super king sized bed 6'6" long x 6' wide...or can be 2 3' wide single beds. We're sorry but unsuitable for children or babies.
Note we are Ferme de l'Eglise which translates as Church Farm...we are right opposite the Church...please do not book here if you don't like Church bells or country noises.

Regional Park: We are set in Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park. Utah Beach located just 10 minutes away is set in a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres this area being upgraded to a UNESCO site. The area is in stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing. The East coast being slightly wilder than the west coast, is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty. This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. On Utah Beach world class Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.
The beaches and seafood: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, seafood lovers note the Oyster beds are located on Utah Beach and it's possible to buy Oysters at ridiculous low prices! Wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!
Don't forget GOLF plenty of courses.
Yet in the summer the beaches are paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or beach combing, shell fish gathering for your supper when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded.
With the bird sanctuary on Utah Beach there is an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals. Huge mussels and oysters beds with the produce destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally
The St Mere Eglise area
We're very close to the motorway (can't hear it) equidistant 8kms to Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise and Utah Beach. We're in the heart of the American sector WW2
Coleville Sur Mer the American Cemetery, Ste Mere Eglise our local town with the parachutist still depicted on the Church Tower, Omaha Beach, Arromanches, Mulbery Harbour, Point du Hoc,
Carentan our other local town bigger than Ste Mere Eglise has 5 supermarkets, harbour and large market day on a Monday. Plus direct train to Paris.

What a wonderful experience!! Our recent trip to Normandy was made even more special with our stay at Tansy and Mike's. They are the most gracious hosts and we felt like we were staying with friends, not just renting a place. We spent a wonderful evening with them enjoying great conversation and wine. Our family rented both the cottage and the barn-loft apartment. Both were perfect accommodations—clean, comfortable and well equipped with the ideal garden room that overlooks a pond and Tansy's farm animals in the rear. We had fresh eggs every morning! Tansy and Mike are animal lovers, as are we, and their pets helped ease the loneliness we were feeling without our own dogs. Their home is right on the property and Tansy was readily available and so helpful in assisting us with our daily excursions. Mike was also great, but he unfortunately had to leave the day after we arrived. We highly recommend this property for exploring Normandy. We took the train from Paris to Caen, rented a car and found exploring the area very easy from this property. We were just minutes from N13, a main motorway. The location of this property is excellent. It is right in the village of Houesville with Carentan and St. Mere Eglise just minutes away. Definitely recommend the Carentan market day and the caramel factory. The highlight of our trip was to participate in the village's VE Day ceremony. What a moving experience, particularly when they began singing the Star Spangled Banner and God Save the Queen. Everyone was so welcoming at the gathering following the ceremony. The only downside was that our trip was way too short! Definitely need more than a few days to fully explore and appreciate this area so we do hope that we will be able to return. Might even try a stay at Tansy and Mike's other home which is located right on Utah Beach. However, we would then miss our great conversations with them. Thank you again, Tansy and Mike, for a stay in Normandy that exceeded our expectations. Don't forget to let us know if you ever make it to the Philadelphia area. Hope to see you again--Donna, Tom, Sara and Jamie |
