About this location
The Basse-Normandie region
Situated in the La Manche region and just across the Channel with frequent ferry links from Portsmouth and Poole to Cherbourg or Caen - or alternatively use the easy rail links or highway from Paris. You will be made very welcome in this idyllic region of Normandy with exquisite walks, a rich heritage, historic sites, lovely farmland and the orchards, the hallmark of this bucolic region.
Ideally located for the D Day Sites : the American, British and Canadian Beaches, with many impressive museums.
Lovely Normandy has been the site of many battles - for example the Vikings (or Norsmen - leading to the name Normandy) occupied the region in the ninth century. In the eleventh century William the Conqueror crossed the channel from here to invade England (Battle of Hastings) and you can see this depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry - taking the opportunity whilst there to seethe impressive Cathedral of Bayeux. After that this region was the theater of the Hundred Year's War and of course most recently the Battle of Normandy that began with D-Day.
Many of our American, English and Canadian visitors are here to see the D Day sites and Mont Saint Michel.
You can easily travel in an hour to the lovely Abbey of Mont Saint - Michel - one of the most visited monuments in France.
Sainte Marie du Mont was amongst one of the first villages liberated on D-Day. The house is situated just 3 minutes from the town center where you will be able to visit one of the most impressive churches in the area. The German invaders used the high steeple gallery as a look-out post as the church dominates the surrounding country side. Utah Beach and the famous town of Sainte Mere Eglise are just 10 minutes drive from the house. Both Utah Beach and Sainte Mere Eglise boast impressive museums, the Invasion Museum and the Airborne Museum. This is the heart of the infamous "hedgerow" country that made the battle on D-day so difficult. You will se many of these lanes still today. Next to the house is the famous "Brecourt Manor" as depicted by the series "Band of Brothers" in the second episode.

"Stunning gite in WW2 Normandy"
We stayed at La Princerie for a week mid-July. The accommodation is a two-floored apartment, so to speak, within the owner's property, a traditional Normandie gite. Ivor, the owner, is an excepti… More
