The Brittany region

The delights of the French way of life can be summed up in one word, Brittany. Brittany offers eight hundred miles of grand rocky coastline with scores of bays and little fishing villages. The enchanting countryside is dotted with giant granite boulders and wild meadows on the moors, thickets and forests in a gently rolling landscape.

It is the buildings that give a region its soul, and in Brittany, you can find it in the megaliths, cavalries, castles, manor houses, countless chapels and old villages. All of them bear witness to Brittany's eventful history and wealth of traditions. Brittany was, after all, home to the enchanted Forest, was where Merlin lived, and where corsairs sailed to the new world. The people from Quebec retrace their roots here, and Great Britain owes the "great" in its name to distinguish it from this unique region of France.

Some specialities of the region are wafer biscuits and butter cookies. However, Brittany's proudest addition to the great cuisines of the world has to be the crêpe and its savoury equivalent the galette – these can be found all over in any of the typical Breton "crêperies" along the roadside or in the centres of old towns where visitors are often welcomed with a traditional cup of cider.

St Mayeux

This is a fascinating area of Brittany giving you the choice of wonderful inland valleys and hills to explore but also being within easy reach of the three very different Brittany coasts; west coast for surfing, north coast for rock pools and south coast for glorious sandy beaches.

There are so many things to do in this area for adults and children alike. Please do not hesitate to ask us if you have any special interests, whatever you enjoy doing you can find it in this area.

Lac de Guerledan

Maison de Philomene is only 9 miles by road from Lac de Guerledan, the largest lake in Brittany. You can enjoy various water sports such as water skiing or swimming, or hire a motor boat, canoe, kayak, rowing boat, dinghy or pedalo, or enjoy a lake cruise. Take dinner one evening during the summer on a floating restaurant. There are great places to eat and drink onshore and three small beaches which offer safe bathing for children. There are also timed walking routes around the lakes perimeter with varying distances and times. Alternatively, if you wish it quieter, Lac Bosmeleac, 7 miles by road, offers a more tranquil setting. With one restaurant overlooking the lake. This also has mapped timed walking routes of varying distances.

The local area is ideal for bike riding with many small quiet country lanes to explore. Cycle along the tow path of the Nantes/ Brest canal or from Carhaix to Loudeac passing by Lac Guerlédan you can now cycle along the 111 kilometre long consolidated sand trail following the tracks of the old railway line.If you want to leave the track there are 24 round trips which vary in length from 4 ½ to 16 ½ km.

There are plenty of golf courses for the keen golfer. Golf de Rimaison at Pontivy is a 9 hole par 70. It has a good club house with refreshments available. The Ajoncs Dor is about 40 minutes drive away and is a 9 hole flat course, also there is a beautiful course overlooking the sea at Val Andre.

Equestrian Activities - There are a number of ‘poney clubs’ in the area where you can hire a hack by the hour, around 15 euros, or for the day at about 75 euros, or you could have lessons and learn to ride. There is Guerlédan Riding school near the lake and there is a horse museum in nearby Corlay.

Fishing - There are numerous fishing lakes close. In Corlay, St Gilles Vieux Marché, St Guen and Lac Guerledan. Fishing permits for public waters can be obtained from local newsagents (tabac) or bars and a fishing licence covers all local areas and cost around 10 euros per day / 30 euros for 2 week

Markets - The nearest is at Mur de Bretagne on a Friday evening with the main part in the square but also dotted along the side streets. Traditional Breton dancing and lots of different general stalls, food, plants clothes etc and also live chickens/turkeys and ducks.

Pontivy

Pontivy, which is 25 minutes away, is a large town with a beautiful Chateau and old town quarter. Formerly named Napoleonville after his design of the new town, it has a beautiful setting on the Nantes-Brest canal and has everything you could possibly need for a day’s excursion. There are some lovely restaurants and very nice shops!

The Coasts and Sea

The north Brittany coast close to St Brieuc, is about 40 minutes by car. Here there are not just lovely sandy beaches but also fascinating rock pools for the children to try their hand at crabbing! Or visit the west Brittany coast for surfing and the south Brittany coast for glorious sandy beaches, both within easy driving distance.

"Really child friendly gite, with pool and house very well presented"

We went as a family group of 4 grandparents two parents and two children of 6 and 4. The gite was very spacious and very thoughtfully fitted out. The facilities were better than we thought they would work out and the owners who live next door were extremely help full with suggestions and support.
We would recommend it as a location for a growing family.

"The Best!!"

Maison de Philomene offered absolutely everything we could ask for a week long stay for our extended family. Adrian and Denise were very accommodating with changing the configuration of the beds and were helpful in solving a medical emergency we had during our stay.

The place itself is simply gorgeous and has everything we could ask for. The kitchen is well equipped for large groups, there is bags of space in the main living areas and bedrooms, superb bathrooms, everything done to a very high spec by Adrian himself and they are just next door if you have any problems.

The pool is great and they have supplied a large range of pool inflatables which we used to the full. Lovely gardens to sit in too.

Great, great holiday for us - would recommend Maison de Philomene as a high quality option for any large group.

"Beautiful house, peaceful location"

We had a great stay in Maison Philomene. The house is immaculate, beautifully furnished with a great garden and a heated pool. The kids spent hours swimming. Everything is really clean and well maintained. Adrian and Denise are helpful without being at all intrusive. The welcome pack was just what we needed after a long journey - the best we have ever had. The location is very peaceful and off the beaten track (although a famous Tour de France climb is just round the corner if you like cycling!)

"Lovely house in a quiet rural setting"

We visited the house for a week in July and found the house to be very well furnished and contained lots of the amenities we required, especially for our 2 young children.

There were lots of nice little extra touches, such as a stool in the bathroom for our toddler, bath mats, a very well stocked toy box and lots of out door games, pool inflatables etc. The heated pool was also great for the children. The welcome pack with local food and drink was better than we had expected and small touches such as being left charcoal for the BBQ, firelighters, washing up liquid and washing powder etc were really useful. Having the owners on hand was also helpful.

Overall we would definitely recommend the property to family groups.

Unfortunately we received no response to the below e-mail. We shall never know.

Hello xxxxx,

Thanks for the lovely review and finding the time. It's appreciated.

Just one question. We do strive to give the best service and noticed a mark deducted in this area; we've obviously failed you in some way. It would be of immense help to know where we lacked in order to improve for future guests. I'm sure you understand why I'm asking and have no intention of annoying you with inane emails.

Kind regards

Adrian & Denise

"Brilliant area, beautiful house very well eqipped very child friendly"

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Philomene. Set in unspoilt Brittany we could have stayed forever. One of the best aspects was the fact that it was very child friendly with plenty to entertain little ones with the play area, pool and 'wilderness' We felt everything had been thought of. Adrian & Denise were on hand and very approachable.
