The Brittany region
The delights of the French way of life can be summed up in one word, Brittany. Brittany offers eight hundred miles of grand rocky coastline with scores of bays and little fishing villages. The enchanting countryside is dotted with giant granite boulders and wild meadows on the moors, thickets and forests in a gently rolling landscape.
It is the buildings that give a region its soul, and in Brittany, you can find it in the megaliths, cavalries, castles, manor houses, countless chapels and old villages. All of them bear witness to Brittany's eventful history and wealth of traditions. Brittany was, after all, home to the enchanted Forest, was where Merlin lived, and where corsairs sailed to the new world. The people from Quebec retrace their roots here, and Great Britain owes the "great" in its name to distinguish it from this unique region of France.
Some specialities of the region are wafer biscuits and butter cookies. However, Brittany's proudest addition to the great cuisines of the world has to be the crêpe and its savoury equivalent the galette – these can be found all over in any of the typical Breton "crêperies" along the roadside or in the centres of old towns where visitors are often welcomed with a traditional cup of cider.
This is a fascinating area of Brittany giving you the choice of wonderful inland valleys and hills to explore but also being within easy reach of the three very different Brittany coasts; west coast for surfing, north coast for rock pools and south coast for glorious sandy beaches.
There are so many things to do in this area for adults and children alike. Please do not hesitate to ask us if you have any special interests, whatever you enjoy doing you can find it in this area.
Lac de Guerledan
Maison de Philomene is only 9 miles by road from Lac de Guerledan, the largest lake in Brittany. You can enjoy various water sports such as water skiing or swimming, or hire a motor boat, canoe, kayak, rowing boat, dinghy or pedalo, or enjoy a lake cruise. Take dinner one evening during the summer on a floating restaurant. There are great places to eat and drink onshore and three small beaches which offer safe bathing for children. There are also timed walking routes around the lakes perimeter with varying distances and times. Alternatively, if you wish it quieter, Lac Bosmeleac, 7 miles by road, offers a more tranquil setting. With one restaurant overlooking the lake. This also has mapped timed walking routes of varying distances.
The local area is ideal for bike riding with many small quiet country lanes to explore. Cycle along the tow path of the Nantes/ Brest canal or from Carhaix to Loudeac passing by Lac Guerlédan you can now cycle along the 111 kilometre long consolidated sand trail following the tracks of the old railway line.If you want to leave the track there are 24 round trips which vary in length from 4 ½ to 16 ½ km.
There are plenty of golf courses for the keen golfer. Golf de Rimaison at Pontivy is a 9 hole par 70. It has a good club house with refreshments available. The Ajoncs Dor is about 40 minutes drive away and is a 9 hole flat course, also there is a beautiful course overlooking the sea at Val Andre.
Equestrian Activities - There are a number of ‘poney clubs’ in the area where you can hire a hack by the hour, around 15 euros, or for the day at about 75 euros, or you could have lessons and learn to ride. There is Guerlédan Riding school near the lake and there is a horse museum in nearby Corlay.
Fishing - There are numerous fishing lakes close. In Corlay, St Gilles Vieux Marché, St Guen and Lac Guerledan. Fishing permits for public waters can be obtained from local newsagents (tabac) or bars and a fishing licence covers all local areas and cost around 10 euros per day / 30 euros for 2 week
Markets - The nearest is at Mur de Bretagne on a Friday evening with the main part in the square but also dotted along the side streets. Traditional Breton dancing and lots of different general stalls, food, plants clothes etc and also live chickens/turkeys and ducks.
Pontivy, which is 25 minutes away, is a large town with a beautiful Chateau and old town quarter. Formerly named Napoleonville after his design of the new town, it has a beautiful setting on the Nantes-Brest canal and has everything you could possibly need for a day’s excursion. There are some lovely restaurants and very nice shops!
The Coasts and Sea
The north Brittany coast close to St Brieuc, is about 40 minutes by car. Here there are not just lovely sandy beaches but also fascinating rock pools for the children to try their hand at crabbing! Or visit the west Brittany coast for surfing and the south Brittany coast for glorious sandy beaches, both within easy driving distance.

"Holidaying with small children will never be stress free, but Maison de Philomene reduces it significantly!"
We booked Maison de Philomene for a "family honeymoon" consisting of us and our 14 month daughter, my parents, and my sister, husband and 2 boys aged 2 1/2 and 8 months. Communication from the start was fantastic with Adrian and Denise replying promptly to any queries we had, including some on the day we left the UK!
When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and were pleased to find thoughtful welcome treats such as pastries from the local boulangerie, milk etc to keep us going for the day. The accommodation suited the small children perfectly with stair gates, highchairs, plastic crockery / cutlery, cots, toys (both inside and out), bath toys etc all being provided and in excellent condition. The adults loved the comfy lounge area and the kitchen was fantastically equipped for all our needs. Adrian and Denise responded quickly to any queries or problems we had (e.g. blown lightbulb) but were not intrusive in any way (you'd hardly believe they were only next door!).
The garden area was lovely and again children friendly with the children loved the little house in particular! Despite entering Autumn months, the pool was used on a number of occasions and again, the toys provided for children were greatly welcomed.
Anyone with children will know that a holiday with them is not so much a holiday anymore! But Adrian and Denise made our time away so much less stressful from start to finish, both in terms of communication and in terms of providing a safe, welcoming, fun filled home for a week. We loved both the house and having the chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of Brittany. Thank you!

"Truly the complete package for a brilliant holiday with kids"
You really cannot fault Adrian and Denise's attention to detail. After a warm greeting and a brief run through of essential information, we were left to discover all the delights of Philomene from the fridge stocked with pate bread wine coffee tea and milk to cupboards and toy chests full of games and toys to suit the tastes of children from 0 - 10. The rooms were all much larger than we had expected from the photographs and the 10 of us (4 children and 6 adults) never felt crowded in even on cool damp days spent indoors. The swimming pool was the highlight. Kept at a nicely warm 28C (86F), it was constantly welcoming even in average weathers. Beyond Philomene, there was enough to keep us amused within 30 mins drive the highlights being the prosperous small town of Pontivy and the Lac de Guerledan with its beaches, boats and cycle trails. A very successful holiday and we plan to go back next year.

"An exceptionally well equipped family holiday home in central Brittany"
This property is about a six hour drive from Calais, and we were surprised and delighted with the more than generous welcome pack that awaited us, along with a warm greeting from the owners, Adrian and Denise. The house is beautiful, with 4 ensuite double bedrooms, and is extremely well and thoughtfully kitted out. The kitchen is particularly well equipped and spacious, with good storage, and a sizeable fridge-freezer. Great thought has gone into the needs of young holiday-makers. Toys, both within the house and in the garden and for the pool were provided in great number, and for all ages. Baby and toddler equipment was also in abundance, with every thought for safety both within the house and in the garden and pool area considered. The property is idyllically situated in a remote hamlet, surrounded by cornfields, and is quiet and peaceful. Absolutely everything has been thought of to keep small children occupied and happy. You only need to go out to buy food. Although it is in a rural position, there are lovely places to visit, and our family particularly enjoyed a day at the nearby lake.

Adrian and Denise provide a warm welcome to Maison de Philomene. The garden, pool and house were perfect for our family holiday. All you really need to bring are pool towels.

"You'll want for nothing in this beautiful gite, in stunning surroundings!"
We (6 adults, 4 children and a baby) spent an absolutely wonderful week at Maison de Philomene. Despite the extremely late hour of our arrival (approaching midnight), we were greeted warmly by our hosts and a crackling fire in the log burner. The welcome pack that was provided for us was packed full of delicious goodies and very much appreciated. The house turned out to be far more impressive than we'd imagined - it has been carefully and tastefully renovated to the highest standard with typically french furniture and accessories. The beds are extremely comfortable and the number of bathrooms (one attached to each room plus a downstairs cloakroom) meant that there was never a queue! What stood out to us most was the attention to detail - we were amazed at the extent to which our needs had been provided for. None of us had come across a better equipped kitchen and the amount of equipment for the baby was wonderful, from high chair and cot through to a vast amount of toys and feeding utensils.
The icing on the cake at this gite was the garden! The huge garden (complete with trampoline, football goals, swing set and playhouse), woodland and swimming pool meant that we (and in particular, the children) rarely wanted to venture away from the house. The swimming pool was used daily and we were delighted to find the shed full of inflatables!
The house is set in beautiful surroundings; very quiet and tranquil but within easy driving distance of some lovely towns and villages. We enjoyed visits to St Brieuc, Guingamp and Loudeac and there were good supermarkets within easy reach too. The boulangerie in Corlay was excellent. Lac de Guerledan was a lovely picnic spot, with stunning views, water sports and a beach.
Maison de Philomene comes very highly recommended, particularly to those with children, and we found our hosts, Adrian and Denise, to be extremely accommodating and helpful - nothing was too much trouble.
The best review we can give comes from our children who were in tears at the end of the week because they wanted 'to stay in the house forever'!!!

"Really child friendly gite, with pool and house very well presented"
We went as a family group of 4 grandparents two parents and two children of 6 and 4. The gite was very spacious and very thoughtfully fitted out. The facilities were better than we thought they would work out and the owners who live next door were extremely help full with suggestions and support.
We would recommend it as a location for a growing family.
