Home description

The location of Bos Eglos (Cornish for 'Home by the Church') takes a lot of beating. Situated on a working farm, it is part of a beautiful pastoral landscape; criss-crossed with walks and creeks which you are free to explore. Bos Eglos is located within the grounds of historic Court Farm owned by a local family for generations. The farm is in the centre of the idyllic, rural village of Philleigh in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula. The Roseland Inn, a 16th Century country pub providing good, locally sourced food and real ale is within footsteps. The Roseland villages of St Mawes, Portscatho and Veryan are all close by and sandy beaches are a ten minute drive away.

The West Country / Cornwall region

Cornwall is Britain’s south westerly treasure. From the rugged coastline of the north coast to the soft beauty of the south, from the crashing surf of Fistral Beach to the historic harbour of Fowey, from the remoteness of the west to the high class restaurants of Padstow, there is something for everybody.

The Roseland Peninsula is one of the very special places of the British Isles. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it has so much to offer the visitor, a week is simply not enough! From breathtaking coastal walks to sailing in the Carrick Roads, from historic castles to stunning sub tropical gardens, from picturesque country pubs to stylish first class restaurants, the Roseland really has everything you could wish for in a Cornish holiday!

St Mawes
St Mawes has changed dramatically over the last 100 years from a sleepy fishing village to the stylish holiday destination it now is. Overlooking its stunning bay, St Mawes is now the yachtsmans paradise with stylish hotels and lots for the visitor to see & do. Take a stroll along the harbour and along the road to the Castle where you can get breathtaking views over the Carrick Roads to Falmouth. Spend some time sitting on the terrace of the Rising Sun, the St Mawes Hotel or in the little alley outside the Victory Inn and watch the world go by. Take a ferry to Falmouth to visit the National Maritime Museum or Pendennis Castle. The little Place Ferry will take you to St Anthonys Head or there are numerous boat trips you can take around the estuary.

St Just in Roseland
No visit to the Roseland is complete without seeing the beautiful church and churchyard at St Just. Probably the only sub tropical churchyard in the British Isles, it is a beautiful & tranquil place.

Portscatho & Gerrans
Portscatho lies in the South-westerly corner of Gerrans Bay on the Roseland peninsula. The East-facing cove affords shelter from the prevailing sou-westerly winds and this meant it was ideal as a base for the pilchard fleets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and still is, although on a much smaller scale, an active fishing port today. The same shelter makes for safe swimming and its proximity to many fine sandy beaches means its a family favourite. Portscatho is also the artists haven on the Roseland and there are a number of galleries to browse. Spindrift Gallery is a fine example and has a lovely selection of ceramics, jewellery, studio glass and many other items. Gerrans at the top to the hill has a fine old church.

Carrick Roads views
The views of the Fal Estuary (the great natural harbour known as the Carrick Roads) are spectacular from many vantage points around the Roseland. St Mawes Castle or St Anthonys Head are the best places. In the height of summer, during Falmouth Week the sight of hundreds of yachts sailing around the beautiful waters is simply unmissable!

Portloe
Portloe is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of the Roseland peninsula and one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Its steep sided valleys has meant that it has managed to escape development over the years and many buildings differ little from when they were built. Sir John Betjeman said of Portloe "One of the least spoiled and most impressive of Cornish fishing villages".

Veryan
Veryan is most famous for its nineteenth century thatched Round Houses. There are five in all, two pairs of which stand at each end of the village and another in the centre. They were originally built by a missionary named Reverend Jeremiah Trist for his daughters. In a round house there are no corners where the devil can hide. A crucifix on the top of each one adds extra protection!

St Mawes / Philleigh area

The tiny tranquil village of Philleigh is in superb countryside in the heart of the rural Roseland Peninsula. Famous for its sixteenth cetury pub, The Roseland Inn, Philleigh is ideally located for exploring the countryside of the Roseland Peninsula whilst only a ten minute drive from the superb beaches around Portscatho. The D-Day embarkation points at Turnaware Point and Smugglers Cottage are only a short drive from Philleigh. Smugglers Cottage is also a great place for a waterside Cornish cream tea!

St Mawes is only a short drive away. St Mawes is one of the finest waterside villages in Cornwall. Situated overlooking an idyllic bay on the eastern side of the famous Falmouth Estuary, St Mawes has one of the mildest climates in Britain due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream. The sea is at the heart of the village and has helped to shape St Mawes from the little fishing village to the fashionable holiday destination that is so popular with visitors. A mecca for boating enthusiasts, St Mawes is a particularly popular sailing centre. Weekly club racing, village regattas and larger events are commonplace on the superb waters of the bay all through the summer.

St Mawes has so much to offer the visitor. St Mawes Castle was built by Henry VIII and is a splendid place to take in the views of the Carrick Roads. There are miles of coastal and countryside walks to take in and some idyllic beaches on which to relax and watch the world go by. The little Place Ferry takes visitors to explore St Anthony's Head or there are regular ferries to Falmouth. Being situated on the seafront, the village is also known for the restaurants and pubs that serve superb fish and shellfish dishes all year round.
