The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region

Located on the Haute Vienne/Dordogne/Charente borders, and the famous 'Richard the Lionheart Route', this beautiful rural region is rich in historic sites, attractions and activities.
There are many large lakes, numerous châteaux, quaint villages and larger historical towns and cities to explore. Throughout the year there are markets and fetes to visit - often celebrating local interests, from chestnuts or mushrooms to local cider or wood crafts.
The St Mathieu area
Just 1.5 kms away from La Marchaderie is the charming village of St Mathieu, with its various shops, bars/restaurants, and its own lake with a small beach, water activities and bar/restaurant. A 15 minute drive takes you to the picturesque town of Piégut with its weekly market.
Limoges, famous for its porcelain, is only 50 minutes drive away. Within the Dordogne and only 45 minutes by car is Brantôme, known as the Venice of the Dordogne, with the river Drone flowing through it, and a little further south is the medieval City of Perigeux. In the Charente and just over 1 hour drive is the hilltop City of Angoulême with its narrow streets littered with cafés and restaurants.
The gite is ideally located to explore the region's many historic sites and attractions - or simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the gite.

Lorraine and Darren were most welcoming and were at hand if we needed to know anything, although we always had total privacy. The gite is beautifully presented, a lot of thought has gone into it. We were lucky enough to have glorious weather so spent a lot of late afternoons in the garden which was very relaxing. The whole area is peaceful. There is an abundance of wildlife very close at hand - shame I left my binoculars at home!!! Will definitely try to go again. |
