Eco chalets caring for the environment.
Vacation in changing times St Martin Chalets have featured predominantly in the British and Austrian national press due to being the first energy self-sufficient eco village for holidays in Europe. Every care has been taken to maintain the beautiful environment and for these chalets to be as self-sufficient as possible. All natural materials are used wherever possible using traditional methods.
zero-carbon The core concept is a highly efficient vegetable oil CHP unit that guarantees clean, green electricity and heat supply. If back up is needed, 100% certified green energy from wind, sun, water and biomass is delivered. Buildings are treble insulated glazing (U value 0.7) and an overall U value of 0.9.
zero-waste A complete recycling system for all waste is required by local by-laws. Organic waste is deposited on the resort's compost heap and re-dug into the vegetable gardens. Educational recycling programmes are part of the holiday!
Sustainable water The resort and the hamlet of St Martin are supplied by a private spring. On-site, rainwater is collected in a large underground tank and used for irrigation. Quick flush system on all toilets is installed, as well as water saving taps.
Local and sustainable building materials The chalets are built using natural, untreated timber from the regions' sustainable forests. The roofs are tiled using larch shingles and insulation is with 100% pure sheep's wool. Construction is by a 100% regional labour.

The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Lungau is surrounded by numerous mountain chains and safely embedded between the Niederen Tauern and Nockbergen at the southern tip of the province of Salzburg.
The valley is renowned for having a lot of sun shine and the nearby village of Mariapfarr, at the ski area of Fanningberg, is known as the sunniest village in Austria.
The ski region encompasses Grosseck/Speireck, less than 10 minutes walk to the lifts. Aineck/Katschberg, a short bus ride. Fanningberg also a short bus ride. Obertauern can be reached by skiing over Grosseck, down to Mautendorf then taking the bus, or take the bus direct from St Martin. Buses are free on production of a lift pass. This vast region offers skiing from late November until early May!!
The mountains majestically tower to a height of over 3,000 metres. Over 100 lakes lie within picturesque alpine pastures and steep raging cliffs. There are still a few secret hide-a-ways that can be discovered on a hike through the area, after all, only 58 lakes are officially recorded on the hiking maps.
Flora and fauna in Lungau is very diversified and is preserved and protected in the many nature reserves.
St Martin in Lungau area

At the ski lift station there is an apres ski bar with indoor and outdoor area's and the usual drinks and music to help you relax after a hard day on the slopes. If the mood takes you and you still have some energy, there is a disco in St Michael.
Summer activities in the area include golf, mountain biking, white water rafting, gliding, hiking, horse riding and organised nature tours to go llama trekking or wild mushroom picking, to name but a few.

Guestbook for Chalet Zirbe St Martin Chalets
Thank you. We had a fantastic time! The best slopes and snow any of us had been on and it was so quiet, you could go on the lift and down a slope and not see anyone else! Lovely! We're already talking about going back next year. I can highly recommend St. Martin Chalets and the Lungau region. A Waller UK.
We had a great time thanks Laurie. The powder was amazing, especially at the Snow Bowl. Comfy sofa bed too!! K Whitehouse. UK.
The chalets, combined with the authentic Austrian sense of fun, great food, personal service and optional action-packed evening activities (I can recommend the tobogganing and, for experienced skiers, “Steep and Deep with Herby”!) make this the kind of resort one would come back to year after year. H Allen-Vercoe. UK
