Eco chalets caring for the environment.

Vacation in changing times

St Martin Chalets have featured predominantly in the British and Austrian national press due to being the first energy self-sufficient eco village for holidays in Europe. Every care has been taken to maintain the beautiful environment and for these chalets to be as self-sufficient as possible. All natural materials are used wherever possible using traditional methods.

zero-carbon

The core concept is a highly efficient vegetable oil CHP unit that guarantees clean, green electricity and heat supply. If back up is needed, 100% certified green energy from wind, sun, water and biomass is delivered. Buildings are treble insulated glazing (U value 0.7) and an overall U value of 0.9.

zero-waste

A complete recycling system for all waste is required by local by-laws. Organic waste is deposited on the resort's compost heap and re-dug into the vegetable gardens. Educational recycling programmes are part of the holiday!

Sustainable water

The resort and the hamlet of St Martin are supplied by a private spring. On-site, rainwater is collected in a large underground tank and used for irrigation. Quick flush system on all toilets is installed, as well as water saving taps.

Local and sustainable building materials

The chalets are built using natural, untreated timber from the regions' sustainable forests. The roofs are tiled using larch shingles and insulation is with 100% pure sheep's wool. Construction is by a 100% regional labour.

The Austrian Alps region

Lungau is surrounded by numerous mountain chains and safely embedded between the Niederen Tauern and Nockbergen at the southern tip of the province of Salzburg.

The valley is renowned for having a lot of sun shine and the nearby village of Mariapfarr, at the ski area of Fanningberg, is known as the sunniest village in Austria.

The ski region encompasses Grosseck/Speiereck, less than 10 minutes walk to the lifts. Aineck/Katschberg, a short bus ride. Fanningberg also a short bus ride. Obertauern can be reached by skiing over Grosseck, down to Mautendorf then taking the bus, or take the bus direct from St Martin. Buses are free on production of a lift pass. This vast region offers skiing from late November until early May!!

The mountains majestically tower to a height of over 3,000 metres. Over 100 lakes lie within picturesque alpine pastures and steep raging cliffs. There are still a few secret hide-a-ways that can be discovered on a hike through the area, after all, only 58 lakes are officially recorded on the hiking maps.

Flora and fauna in Lungau is very diversified and is preserved and protected in the many nature reserves.

St Martin in Lungau

The villages of St Martin and St Michael join together and are very traditional, yet have many modern facilities. There is a choice of Supermarkets and Banks within easy walking distance.

You will find welcoming local houses offering traditional hearty food and drinks in a cosy atmosphere, as well as international restaurants. Most of the hotels are open to non residents for dining, with some offering entertainment or dancing.

At the ski lift station there is an apres ski bar with indoor and outdoor area's and the usual drinks and music to help you relax after a hard day on the slopes. If the mood takes you and you still have some energy, there is a disco in St Michael.

Summer activities in the area include golf, mountain biking, white water rafting, gliding, hiking, horse riding and organised nature tours to go llama trekking or wild mushroom picking, to name but a few.

"Lovely Chalets with a warm welcome."

These were lovely chalets in a quiet friendly village. Well appointed, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The large wood burning stove in the main room of our chalet was a good focal point. All the chalets are arranged around a pond in garden surroundings, nice in summer or winter.

Thanks for the great review. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back to our paradise in Austria.

"Holiday at St Martins Chalets Austria"

Fantastic welcome by the hosts Jodie & Herbie. All of our food and wine had been delivered and all of our ski hire equipment was waiting for us on our arrival which meant we could ski that day.You could never tire of the ski area available with a fantastic lift system without the queues of other ski resorts.
The chalet itself was first class with wood available each night for a fantastic log fire. I have already booked for next year not for one but for two weeks!

Thank you for your glowing review. Lets hope your next visit is just as good, if not better than this years.

"One of a kind"

St martins was everything i expected it to be...and then some, staying in the biggest chalet was an added bonus, the rooms were imaculate, the fire worked a treat, the breakfast rolls to die for, and a stones throw away from the ski lifts. I will recommend this place to anyone going in the future, i even plan to come back i liked it that much, definately a great trip, backed by the people i had the pleasure in going with.

So glad you enjoyed your stay at the chalets. We aim to offer the highest standard of accommodation and service. We look forward to welcoming you back to the paradise of Lungau.

"Fantastic"

Located just off the motorway, finding the location was easy. The road network was well maintained and kept useable even through heavy snow.
The chalets are very well maintained and clean. They are in a nice little area and have people on site looking after everything.
Ski hire was less than 1 min walk away. Dennis certainly knows his stuff! He couldn't have been more helpfull.
Just a short drive or walk to the bottom of the ski area. Lift passes were very reasonably priced.
Skiing area is good with plenty of variety for all abilities.
Bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance. Staff and patrons were freindly and accommodating. There was no language barrier if you were prepared to try!
We plan to return in the summer as this area looks it would be equally as good without the snow.
There is plenty to do in the summer and it gets hot.
Can't wait to go back.

So glad you enjoyed your stay in the chalet and the area. The summer is fantastic and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
