The Normandy / Manche region
- Swimming and sunbathing on the beautiful sandy west coast beaches at Cartaret, where the gulf stream produces a little-known sunny microclimate. - Country and coastal rambling, this region was the most affluent in France in the 18th Century and has a wealth of grand houses, gardens and culture. There is a labyrinth of beautiful ancient walkways, for which we have detailed maps. - Shopping at the daily regional markets, particularly the one in medieval Bricquebec on Monday (9am to 12.30pm) - A trip across the oyster beds by amphibious craft to Tatihou island, an ancient penal colony and bird sanctury off St. Vaast la Hougue. - An evening at the village butcher's bar are brilliant. An informal 4 course meal usually cooked over a fire (€10 including wine and cider). Children are welcome, and at half price! - Incomparable moules frites at a quayside bar in Cartaret, opposite the Channel Islands. - An omelette aux lardons avec frites at the end of your coastal walk Omonville la Rougue at the harbour bar. - A visit to some local chateaux and their gardens, Toulaville, Vauville, Urville-Nacqueville, Crosville, and Martinvast. - The great Bayeux tapestry exhibition is only 45 minutes away. - A round of golf at Cherbourg's picturesque, quite demanding (and underused!) golf course at Glacerie. - The landing beaches and museums. - A fun few hours at the indoor pool, with the snaking slides at La Piscine de Collignon in Tourlaville (east Cherbourg). - Surfing (or watching them!) at Sciotot bay. - A flutter at Cherbourg casino, rounding off the night in the local nightclub. - Tea or aperatifs on the quayside at Barfleur, after climbing the 365 steps of Gatteville lighthouse. - Succumbing to the many temptations at Auchan, the best of the three hypermarkets in the region. - A boat trip round the Napoleonic harbour in Cherbourg.
St Lo area
Normandy has a rich heritage of cathedrals, battlefields, chateaux, beaches and fine cuisine. Normandy gets its name from the 10th-century Norman Vikings that settled in the region.
The real highlights of the region of Normandy include the long and wonderful beaches (Norman Riviera) and irresistible ancient harbours. Deauville still attracts the Paris crowds with its villa's, horse racing and casinos. Worth visiting too are Honfleur and Barfleur, ports with elegant promenades and superb ancient charm.
The food of Normandy owes its most distinguishing characteristic – it's gut-bursting, heart pounding richness – to the lush orchards and dairy herds of its agricultural heartland. This is especially true of the area south east of Caen. Normandy's long coastline also ensures that the seafood is superb and a real speciality of Normandy.
Rouen is the capital of Normandy, and remains one of France's most ancient and historically significant cities. This fine medieval city would still feel familiar to Joan of Arc, whose life came to a painful and tragic end in its main square.
More recently the Blitz bombs that ravaged the city during the 2nd World War destroyed all of Rouen's bridges and the industrial area, so much so that you will be forgiven for not realizing that the Seine once meandered through its centre.
Normandy boasts a fine history, Chateau Gaillard was Richard the Lionheart's fortress, The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the world famous historical documents (detailing the Saga of William the Conqueror) and more recently the war cemetreies and museums are a constant reminder of the D-Day landings and the brutal conflict with the Germans.
Visit the invasion beaches and really learn about the fascinating and desperately distressing Battle of Normandy. The famous Mt. Saint Michel Abbey is worth a visit, it's second to the Eiffel Tower as France's most popular landmark, and visits to the abbey are free and unrestricted.
Because of Normandy's proximity to the UK, Normandy is an extremely popular for long weekend breaks and chateau holidays. Normandy has some of the best golf courses in France, but despite growing annual tourist figures every year the region remains largely untouched and unspoilt.
To the French the spirit of Normandy is in its produce; this is the land of camembert & calvados, cider and seafood!!
