The Normandy / Manche region
Normandy has every conceivable mixture of history and landscape. It exhibits an astonishing variety of scenery with its cliffs, golden sandy beaches, wooded valleys and close by the stunning Vire Valley Gorge. The Vire Valley is known for its micro climate.
Normandy offers lively coastal towns, e.g. Granville with its casino, art galleries and the Christian Dior Museum. there is a Zooligical Park on the road between Granville and Villedieu les Poeles. Villedieu is home to 'frying pans and bells' - with good eateries and plenty of shops, as well as museum and market well worth a visit. and close to the house. Other little gems on the coast are Portbaille, Carteret and Barnville. It also offers idyllic countryside villages and hamlets where you will always find a boulangerie and bar! Bayeux and all the Normandy landing beaches are a must. Brittany easy to reach.
Honfleur is called the St.Tropez of the north and is lovely just walk around, take in the Saturday market and eat outside chosing one of the many restaurants there - fantastic seafood and such a pretty place. Lots of information on arrival of recommended places to visit - many we have visited ourselves.
St Lo area
St. Lo lies at the heart of the Cotentin peninsular. The town is surrounded by ramparts and overlooked by Notre Dame cathedral. Here the past, present and future combine.
There are a wide variety of shops and restaurants and a very good Saturday Market. Other local markets are Vire, and not to be missed Villiedieu and of course Granville.
Take the coastal road towards Mont St Michel, ride on the beaches, go to Brittany for the day.
St. Lo is home to the largest of 23 National stud farms in France and a wide variety of shows and tournaments are held here ideal for the horse lover.
Famous fairs take place at Lessay dating from 100 years and also the fair of Gavray, both held at the beginning of September. If you see a sign for 'Vide Grenier' these are the french attic sales similar to UK car boot sales. Historic places within easy reach include Bayeux, all the D-Day beaches including Arrowmanche, home of the famour Mulberry Harbour, Caen, Bayeux, Lisieux and the very famous Mont Saint Michel.
Caen is only one hour away. It has a famous museum dedicated to the second world war.
Cherbourg has also a very well thought of maritime museum .
Mondeville is the large indoor shopping centre - ideal for everyone plus cinema and ten pin bowling and lots more. Avranche has new Carrefour.
