The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region
Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur is a stunning region of France with a rich cultural and architectural history . It boasts beautiful hilltop villages, acres of lavender fields and beautiful countryside. Roman ruins, the Gorges du Verdon, France's own Grand Canyon are all to be found in this unspoilt area. Wonderful restaurants abound and there are many local wine producing chateaux.
St Laurent du Verdon area
St Laurent nestles among the beautiful lavender fields of Provence. During June and July they are reaching harvest time and an early evening cycle or drive will mesmerise you with the wonderful smell of lavender and the vibrant blue hue spreading like a carpet as far as the eye can see. It is a truly breathtaking sight and Provence at its most stunning.
The beautiful Lac Sainte Croix is just a 15 minute drive, great for picnics, sailing, windsurfing, scenic walks and riding. The spectacular Gorges du Verdon, with its stunning phosphorescent green water, also just a stone’s throw from the chateau, both are real "must sees". You can hire a boat from the local village of Quinson and experience the Gorges at first hand or, if you are really brave, you can go white water rafting!
You are in the midst of fantastic walking and cycling country. Go riding (all standards) round the lake at Artignosc, enjoy the wonderful views, and even tether up your horses and go for a dip en route! Rent a boat or canoe from Quinson and sail up the Gorges with a picnic and soak up the breathtaking scenery. Perhaps you would like to learn to windsurf or sail - all available nearby at the beautiful Lac St Croix.
In April and May, wild flowers and poppies abound in all the fields and meadows and, in June and July, enjoy the heady perfume of the magnificent surrounding lavender fields which are in full bloom.
There are great markets to visit, Riez and Aups (20 minutes) on Thursdays and Saturdays and Lorgues (much bigger, 40 minutes, but worth the journey!) on Tuesdays, these are all a "foodies" dream with colourful stalls overflowing with olives, salamis, cheeses, wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious paella and cooked chickens - highly recommended!
You are within easy reach of the coast at Monaco or St Tropez if you feel like a day out to soak up a bit of glitz and glamour. There is also the wonderful Friday market in Ventimiglia, Italy which is a train journey from Les Arcs and another fun thing to do if you like shopping!
Explore the numerous pretty hilltop villages and restaurants; spend a day wine tasting at the many local chateaux! Or, just stay home, play tennis, have a barbecue, relax by the pool.....you will not be bored! More information on all of the above is available in the studio guest manual.
