� about 2 miles from St Kew is Tretawn, a handsome, detached, Grade II* listed, 16th/17th cent. manor house surrounded by 5 acres of garden and woodland with big, wide sweeping gravel forecourt. It forms part of the Lamellen Estate which is still managed by its Cornish owners. Doubtless only the Cornish language was heard within its thick walls during those early centuries and probably a few barrels of fine French brandy were left in its secret places, safe from the Customs men � a time when everyone, from magistrates to tin miners, was involved in a little alternative income!

 

It is 100 yards back from the A39, with huge lawn at the back (fields beyond) with garden furniture, barbecue, Wendy house and adjacent barns housing an indoor heated swimming pool (28� x 14� x 4' deep, changing room, loo, poolside shower) and games area (table tennis, full-sized snooker table, darts, TV, larder fridge, sink). Partly covered dog run (15' x 5'). About 300 yards away are 100 acres of private woodland to walk or cycle, with the Allen River flowing through.

 

Inside, big and roomy with ample space for everyone. Fine open porch to hall; to the left, big living room, separated from the hall by Elizabethan oak panelling, with fireplace (woodburner), TV/Sky/DVD and huge mullioned windows (window seats); to the right of the hall, snug/reading room (TV/DVD) with electric woodburner-effect fire. Double doors from living room to substantial dining room and then to big fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer) with  Aga (gas and electric ovens); boot room (fridge-freezer) with door to garage; shower-room (suite). Along the back of the house, large play area-cum-hall with woodburner and door to garden terrace (bench/seats); utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, sink, loo).

 

Two staircases (original steep spiral with rope rail and conventional) up to family bathroom (suite, shower over bath) and seven bedrooms:

-   Huge double (6� zip-linked bed or twin) up 3 steps with TV and 4 steps into en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath)

-   Big double (6� bed) up 2 steps with TV and 2 steps down to en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath)

-   Child�s single, accessed via these two big doubles (lockable door to each)

Hot water and heating by biomass boiler. Spring water. Pub, shop, garage, � mile. Arrival after 3.30pm. Damages Deposit �400. An exceptional family house with lots of room outside for energetic youngsters, very private and in a brilliant position for Rock, Port Isaac and Padstow.

The Cornwall region

Cornwall�s north coast: from the river Camel north to Bude and on to Morwenstow and the highest cliffs in the West Country, it is a mixture of great cliffs and beaches. Walking (coast path) and bird-friendly cliffs (usually no road near): peregrines possible. Great sand/surf beaches at Polzeath, Trebarwith, Widemouth Bay, Bude and Sandy Mouth; sandy coves at Port Gaverne, Bossiney, Crackington Haven, Duckpool, and others less accessible; Rock, also sandy, is the place for watersports, including sailing on the Camel estuary; very fine golf course (St Enodoc); mini-fjords at Port Quin and Boscastle. Port Isaac is very pretty round its cliff-enclosed harbour.

The well-worth-riding Camel Trail cycleway (bicycles for hire) follows the river Camel from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. Pencarrow is a beautiful house with wonderful garden. Tintagel has a ruined castle (King Arthur�s?) on a wild headland. St Juliot church was restored by Thomas Hardy and �a pair of blue eyes� nearly fell down a Crackington cliff. Bodmin Moor, its highest hills quite mountainous, is only a little way inland and Blisland, on its northern edge, is one of Cornwall�s prettiest villages - makes a change from sea: so does lovely Lanhydrock (see Cornwall�s �Med�). Not far to Eden (see South Cornwall).

St Kew Highway

St Kew: little village (good food pub, medieval church) amid trees in a valley, off the beaten track. Golf, 1 mile. Sea at Port Isaac/Port Gaverne (cove beach), 3� miles, or Polzeath (splendid sand/surf beach), 5�, or Rock (sandy beach, watersports, sailing school and St Enodoc golf course), 4�. Camel Trail, 4.
